A sailors sailor

Post by Jim Walsh »

I will miss him. I have spent many hours reading and re-reading his many fine articles and books. Roth and Hiscock will always be my favorite authors. I am lucky enough to have a couple books from his private collection. They bear his autograph in pencil and the hilarious thing is that he was proofreading as he read these books. He actually added punctuation and underlined words he felt significant or which appear to have been used incorrectly in his opinion. He also added question marks to items which he must have had a problem with. I wish his wife well.

A gentleman

Post by David VanDenburgh »

I met him at a boat show a couple of years ago. In spite of his fame in the sailing world, he was humble, approachable, every bit the gentleman. His books gave me much pleasure over the years and I learned a lot from them. A good man gone.

I have his video, Two Against Cape Horn, showing sailing and being ship wrecked way down south in the Chilian Fiords. I was very impressed by his and Margaret's composure while off loading supplies and setting up camp on one of the islands.

He seemed to be a true gentleman..
