Hey Chris, I have a small aluminum skiff I use for crabbing. I have used both a long-shaft (8hp honda) and a long-shaft (2 hp honda from my TY). I was surprised at how much better the skiff handled with the short-shaft motor - even though it was a bit too heavy. In a sharp turn the increased leverag...

I have bought base plates and SS hinges from Dwyer Mast ( http://www.dwyermast.com ) for several boats. I have always found them to be helpful and very responsive. If you don't see what you want on their web site, give them a call. My impression is that they have lots of odds and ends that never win...

I miscalculated
 The heat absorbed by the ice as it went through the phase transition of solid to liquid would be sufficient to raise the temperature of an equal mass of water by 176F, but since it started at 32F the final temperature would be 208F or nearly boiling! Yes...science is stranger than fiction. :?...

heat absorbed by melting ice
OJ, It really is thermodynamics! One calorie (cal) is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water (or ice) 1 degree Celsius (C), but a gram of ice at 0 C (32F) must absorb 80 cal of heat to convert it to 1 g of water at 0 C (Its heat of fusion). So it takes as much heat t...

Good point sloopjohnl, I also made a boom crotch for my TY, although I made mine out of two longer 2 x 4's for use while stepping and unstepping the mast. I place the boom crotch on the ground and leaning against the stern of the boat while Ondine is on her trailer. The boom crotch then holds the ma...

I can't give you any advice on the roller furling, but I have towed by TY extensively. I towed it 1000 miles from Houston to Iowa on a home (very well) made trailer. I sold that trailer because it was too big to fit in my garage and bought a Triad float-off with hydraulic disk brakes and subsequentl...

I ordered a mast step and tabernacle from rig-rite. After 6 months I was still waiting. I found and ordered the same items from Dwyer; they arrived within a week and cost 1/2 what rig-rite charged me for the same parts. When the Rig-rite items finally arrived, they had the Dwyer trademark on them. G...

Oswego John, Yes, it's true. Foam flotation. As David suggest it is definately factory installed. There is foam in nearly all the spaces between the hull and the liner {and the hull is fully lined up to the hull-deck joint). It has it's pros and cons. It makes getting to the interior parts of the hu...

I believe that Cape Dory must have built all three versions of the typhoon more or less simultaneously, since you see all three versions from about all the years TY's were manufactured. (with the exception of the very early weekenders with the wood slat seats and keel stepped masts). We have an open...

I use a long shaft honda 2 hp on my Ty daysailor. I sail in Puget Sound (Admiralty Inlet), where sometimes the current outside our Jetty is 6 or 7 knots. No amount of horse power is going to make my Ty do better than five to five and a half knots through the water. Its not the hp but the length at t...

Jack, I just tried to take my own advice and go to the triad web site. You can get there but you'll not be able to view the trailer options for the TY trailer. If you ask for a quote they'll send you the info. At any rate, with a tongue extension and a reasonabley pitched boat ramp you should be abl...
