Re: Work...then sailing

Hi all, As you may have heard from the news the central Philippine was hit by a big typhoon, Yolanda. Much death and damage. Sunshine and I left Carmen a few days before the storm hit. We went to Bonbonon, on the south end of Negroes Island. On my birthday, the 8th the storm hit. Since we were so fa...

Work...then sailing

Hi all, It has been some time since I've had much to report. So now time for an update. My last big sail was returning from Subic in January. Not much of a sail since there wasn't much wind. That is except for one night, the night I blew out the mainsail. When I returned to Carmen I had a long list ...

Re: Sunbrella material for cabin cushions

Hi all, Have used "Sunbrella" type fabric on all my boats. Recommend it. Probably last forever inside the boat. If you don't like the feel or you want to change the appearance cover it with single bed-fitted sheets or get some nice cotton/polyester fabric and make your own(what I did on Su...

not to go cruising in this area of the world at this time!! http://www.passageweather.com/maps/chinasea/wind/024.png Hi all, Down here in the Visayas(central Phils) we only have a nice cooling breeze from this smallish typhoon. But it looks like Hong Kong is going to catch it good. I'm down at aroun...

Re: Pin rails for satety

Hi all, Love my "Ass Planks". Not fancy but they work very well. On FeNIX it's just a simple plank. http://www.sbastro.com/FeNIX/images/Passages07/NZ2OZ02.jpg On Sunshine I added wooden dowel pins. Simple and cheap. http://www.sbastro.com/SunShine/images/Gal2Mar/Sailing_Gal2Mar_23-07-10%20...

Re: active - again - looking for a trailer

Hi Warren, I built a trailer for my 28, FeNIX. Do not know if you could do the same. The boat trailered easily but could have sat a bit farther forward on the trailer for long distances. I set it aft to facilitate rudder removal. Go here to see what I did. http://www.sbastro.com/FeNIX/Projects/trail...

Re: Just a little taste

Hi all, Thanks for the well wishes. Don't forget that it is summer here. Even though it is normally spring in the northern hemisphere. Here in Cebu at approx. 10*30' N lat, it is summer when the sun passes overhead. That is when the sun's declination matches Cebu's latitude. That was exact about one...

Just a little taste

Hi all, Here's another little taste of cruising in the Philippines. Sunshine and crew just returned from a one week local cruise among some of the nearby islands. Dream on. Kalanggaman Island is about 35 miles NNE of Carmen. Kalanggaman Island. We are anchored in about 15' of very clear water. http:...

Re: Bobstay condition question

Hi all, As far as I know the stock bobstay is wire. On FeNIX I replaced the bobstay before I left Florida because it was not long enough. That's because I made the bowsprit longer. My initial new bobstay was a piece of 3/8" chain. This corroded alarmingly. I replaced it in the Galapagos with a ...

Re: Cruising the San Juans again

Hi Dick, As a small aside. Go to your local fiberglass supplier and pick up a can of mold release wax. This is real high quality carnuba wax, not made to shine up your classic car but to provide a release agent for fiberglass molds. Bring it home. Get an old sock, you know the one that is left after...

Re: SunShine gets a BJ in the Philippines

Hi all, I answer to Dick's question Sunshine is in Port Carmen, Cebu Island, Philippines. The central islands of the Fils are called the Visayas. I put in a mooring here last year. A big 80kg cast iron fisherman with 10 meters of 17mm stud link chain and 25 meters of 22mm polyprop line. Quite secure...

SunShine gets a BJ in the Philippines

Hi all, Sunshine got a bottom job this past weekend. Tied against the wall at the local "marina" and using the tides made the job pretty easy. My self and two local workers scrubbed and sanded while the water went down and painted while the water rose. It was possible to get on two coats. ...
