Epiphanes

I redid my teak with it last year and am really pleased. However, one lesson I learned was you really need to put a bunch of coats on. In the spring I only got three coats on, telling myself I'd put more on later, of course I didn't and it stared to were off by the end of July. I'm in Virginia, so t...

Living aboard a CD30

I have a CD30c and have thought about this a good deal. And I have distilled my thoughts down to this. If it were me alone the 30 would be just about perfect, however I'd remove the door to the head and the folding door to the vee birth. The 30 is big enough to go anywhere yet small enough to handle...

Sailing Cutter Downwind

I have a 30c as well. When going down wind I take the staysail down and use the main and genoa. Your right that the staysail blocks the wind for the head sail, either yankee or genoa. If the wind is high I roll in the genoa and put up the staysail. That's just the way it is and if going dead down wi...

Boat search

I'm a happy CD30 owner, but also a Bristol 24 owner, which has a diesel engine and is in good shape. Sitting in Deltaville, VA. Asking $7,000. It's full keel, built like a tank and would be a very forgiving first boat.

Backing up

Now you know why you've seen so many CD's bow in at the slip! I tell my crew that I have no control in reverse (not actually quite true) so they will stay in position to fend me off when a little puff of wind comes along. Maneuvering at the dock is not Cape Dory's strong point. The board has a bunch...

Thanks-but doing the work?

Is taking off the thermostat and manifold a doable job for a guy like me, who is a C+ (on a good day) mechanic, or should I have someone who knows what they are doing-do it?

Fitting

I figure it's a five minute job (once I get my fat-old body in position) so if it ain't completely broke don't fix it.

MD7A Temperature Gauge

I was watching my temperature gauge on Saturday and it would go slowly back and forth between the, I'd say, 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock position, every 30 seconds or so. Always in the green zone. I'm assuming that's the thermostat opening and closing. Should it do that or just stay steady at one temp? ...

I am

Saturday out of Detlaville, 15 to 22 knots from the SSW, temperature 75, port tack, spray over the bow, dodger wet, reefed main and stay sail, easy beat, making 41/2 knots, wife sound asleep in the cockpit. Yep, I'm having fun.

That sucking sound

I'd bet it's clogged, salt spray gets up in there and does it's magic. However, the sound is subtle and if there is a lot on background noise you might hear it. In my experience, a pipe cleaner does the trick, but this is best done from the inside. At least on my 30.

Pumpout

My air vent does get clogged now and then, it should be located near the pump out deck fitting, when you start to suck out the goodies, listen for the air being sucked in, if there is no whishing sound, you might want to clean out the vent where it enters the hull. The good news is, when things work...

Bowsprit

Mine is mahogany and was discolored from being exposed to the elements to different degrees. I sanded, bleached, sanded and bleached but could not get down to a uniform wood color(sort of quitting my job and moving to the yard). I finished it in Epiphanes Clear Finish (great stuff) but the discolorati...

30 vs 33

There is a 330- the cutter rigged 33 with a T cockpit, for sale on Yacht World. Best of all possible worlds. Although, if my life had an opening, I would not hesitate to leave on my CD30C. Though if I were alone I'd take the head and V-berth doors off.
