I use an old industrial safety harness to wrap around the motor then attach the vang to a metal loop on the harness. The rig shown in the prior note looks better. I pull my motor twice a year to paint with anti foul. Otherwise it in the water continuously.

I used a wood dowel of the same radius as the groove, cut on an angle to scrape the old material out of the groove. It was cheap, easy and no damage to the port metal.

Lots of good points above, but if your main concern is the O/B in saltwater, do not worry - proper maintenance will prevent significant problems. Here's how I finally solved this situation. I was unable to pull the old tubing out, no matter how hard I pulled, so I could not pull new hose through existing holes. My solution, that is working quite well, was to PUSH hard 3/8 inch OD polyethylene tubing through the old tubing until I could see it...

The clear plastic tubing running from the water tank back to the sink has sprung a small leak and is messing up the teak laminate nearby.
