Re: Bermuda
Very cool, Steve! I have always dreamed of sailing to Bermuda, but you have done it. It sounds like a great trip. Were you single handed?

AGM batteries
Many thanks for the excellent discussion and advice. I have had my flooded batteries for 5 years and they seem to be fine, so I think I will hold onto them and forgo the AGMs.

AGM batteries
The two flooded batteries I now have are held on a wood platform in the starboard cockpit locker in my CD 27. They are enclosed in plastic battery boxes which are strapped down. They are very difficult to service (i.e. checking the fluid level during the summer). Pagoo is on a mooring; my alternator...

AGM batteries
I am thinking of changing my deep charge flooded group 24 batteries to AGM type batteries. It seems that there are three makers: Trojan, Lifeline, and Power-Tech. Has any one had experience with the three types - Power-Tech seems less expensive than the other two. I currently trickle charge my batte...

Aftermath
I couldn't resist posting this link that my son sent me; the aftermath of Earl:
http://www.theday.com/article/20100905/ ... 59854/1044 .
I think they were crazy to arrange a race under these conditions. The wind is supposed to drop this afternoon so maybe I can put the sails back on my boat

Broadband radar
Dick, there was an interesting article on broadband radar and a review of the Navico BR24 unit by Chuck Husick in the May/June issue of Ocean Navigator. It definitely sounds like something to keep in mind. It basically uses the same general technique as some echo locating bats, like the greater hors...

Cape Dory 27 repower
My prop is the recommended 12 x 9. It works very well; the currents run strong in Fishers Island Sound but I have had no trouble, the Beta Marine runs like a charm. Drew, the mechanic in our yard, put in new beds (?) to mount the engine on. Two problems, the wet exhaust is on the starboard side of t...

I purchased a Mystic Stainless 3 segment ladder to install on my CD 27. Initially I attached it on the Jenny T-track on the port side of the cockpit, but the tumblehome prevented one of the standoffs from making contact. I have now installed a T-track amidships and I think that will work better. It ...

repowering CD27
Andy, about 2 years ago I repowered Pagoo with the BZ482. So far it has been an excellent engine with a lot more power than the old Yanmar YSM. I did not do the work myself but had the mechanic at our boatyard do it. He also put a new BZ482 in Dick Bartel's CD25D and I think Dick is pretty happy.

what a day!
My wife and I were in Stonington having lunch. I looked out over Fishers Island Sound and said "What a day for a sail! I wonder if Steve is out in his boat"....
