Re: First Impressions 22D

Nice post, with charming pictures. As a fellow Buzzards Bay sailor (Squeteague Harbor/Megansett), I think Cape Dorys are well designed for our "square waves" and sudden wind shifts. With my sails reefed, my 25D can handle almost anything the bay can hand out (more than I can). If you're no...

Weather stripping for cockpit lockers?

I've been thinking for many years about sealing my rattling, and probably leaking, cockpit lockers with weather stripping. I've taken measurements, and total needed for both lockers on a 25D is 16' 4". But I've got two questions: 1) Has anybody tried this? 2) What's the best way to get the foam...

Do I have a voltage leak? If not, what happened?

Hi all, It's been a long, but not cold winter here in New England. I just started working on Crème Brûlée this week, and I noticed that the boat's grounding plate is encrusted with more barnacles than usual, as well as a thick, white fuzzy crystalline deposit. I've never seen anything like that befo...

Re: Interior Teak Care

I rarely finish the interior teak and teak-veneer on my 25D, but once every other year or so, I wash the interior woodwork with Murphy's Oil Soap. Maybe once, sometimes twice a year, I wipe it with lemon oil. Of course, my cabin interior is small, so this is not a terrible burden.

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves

You mean you change sails in the furler? Guess that's doable. Takes you about what - 20 minues
That's about right. I have to do it at the mooring. It's a PITA, but if it looks like there's going to be a few days of strong winds, it's worth the effort.

Re: 25D Upwind in Waves

I have a 25D, which I sail on often-choppy and windy Buzzards Bay, and I often brave the bay's "square waves" in winds of up to 25 knots. I have a 135% roller-furled genoa and a standard mainsail with two reef points. If the wind is above 15 knots, I usually leave the mooring with one reef...

Re: How to Quiet Old Diesel

FWIW, I have the same problem. I've got a Yammer 1GM in my 25D. I've had the shaft replaced after an accident, and I had the motor mounts replaced, too. The engine runs well enough, but it's just too noisy for me to hear the VHF (I don't have radar). A number of years ago I replaced my radio with a ...

Re: Signet Marine depth sounder problem

UPDATE: My depth sounder has been working well since I took several sails at high tide in strong winds,
Perhaps there was slime built up around the sensor? I hope posting this note won't make the gremlins angry..

Signet Marine depth sounder problem

Hi all, Since buying Crème Brûlée in 2003, I've been sailing with the original Signet Marine round depth sounder. I have stopped using the knot log altogether, because the paddle wheel gets totally fouled after a week on the mooring and my chart plotter gives me a satisfactory SOG reading. A few yea...

Re: Springy Cabin Sole?

She should hire a surveyor. If not, it's usually caveat emptor, but as Jim says, if she wants the boat without a survey, you should give her a couple of hundred off. I'm facing the same problem with my 40-year-old 25D.

Re: CD 25D Issues

As for the instruments: My 25D has Signet Marine depth sounder and speed log. I was able to get my depth sounder repaired/replaced by Signet, which is still in business in California. I don't bother using the speed log, because the paddle wheel gets fouled after a few weeks anyway. Instead, I take m...

Re: Cockpit sole repair/replacement

That's what I suspected, Jim. I'm not a pro, and the pros get paid for their skill and expertise. And besides, at my age--and mu boat's--I can't take it with me!
