backing plates for chainplates

Why are there no backing plates on my 1979 CD28 chainplates?

My guess would be some PO "repaired" them... That does not look like it came from the factory that way.

I just removed the chainplates on my new (to me) Typhoon, so my boyfriend can make me a set of backing plates. Why these were never strongbacked in the first place is mind boggling. It was a right pain in the butt to unscrew everything.

Thanks for the responses. My further research results in my belief that the backing plate may be a long piece of steel that goes under all three chainplates. It also may be attached to steel vertical members, all fiberglassed over into the hull and deck. It may be original and done by Cape Dory when the boat was built in '79. I did have the boat surveyed by a SAMS certified guy before I bought it last Spring. He said, "Shroud chainplates bolt through the hull/deck flange. All appear to be secure, with no leaks." I didn't, at the time, do the acrobatics necessary to get a look at them below, relying on him. I finally did yesterday as part of a Spring check of things. I'm almost sure, but not positive, that the 1980 CD25 I previously owned had visible backing plates. That's why I was surprised by the nuts-on-glass appearance of mine on the CD28. I don't know about Typhoons but you might want to do more research and check carefully to see if it has backing plates hidden by fiberglass.

A good Magnet should help you determine if there is mild steel embedded in the fiberglass.

In 1976, they were using mild steel with rebar down the sides:

looks just like my new 25 (1974)

The steel/iron rybar backing is in between the glass and the deck as in the original post. I took off the nuts and added new backing due to the original steel decaying....not a great solution, but hopefully a stop gap.

On our 1980 the chainplate backers are mild steel and the steel is exposed not embedded.
Please forgive the inclusion of the mud-dauber home, that was the first time I ever saw it, it is gone now.

My CD 22 has exposed steel backing plates. Not sure of material but can check.
