Freshening up the old pedestal

Post by Jim Walsh »

Finally got around to making my old pedestal presentable again this past August. Here are the before and after photos. I spent one afternoon sanding the pedestal by hand to remove as much of the original finish as was deemed practicable by the guy doing the sanding, me. I then masked as necessary and brushed on a coat of aluminum primer. The following morning I lightly sanded the primer and applied a coat of Interlux Brightside. Late in the afternoon I applied a second coat. Certainly not perfect nor as professional looking as a sprayed finish but still a vast improvement. You'll notice I chose Bristol Beige over the original white. I like it, and when you stand back far enought it looks flawless :D

Good looking project Jim! What brand of aluminum primer did you use? How did you like using the Interlux Brightside for this job? I have read of some people getting good results with plain old Rustoleum.

Thanks for the complement. I used Rustoleum Latex Aluminum Primer. The Brightside was fine. I didn't want to repeat the exercise any sooner than necessary so I went with something specifically formulated for the harsh marine environment. The Rustoleum product may be fine but I didn't care to experiment.

Here's a photo, after all the hand sanding, with two coats of the Rustoleum primer applied. I applied two coats of the Brightside also, as can be seen in the previous photo.
