halyard winch maintenance

Post by herb stone »

My CD28 has a Barlow #15 mast winch (marked 1964-81) which I have not been able to figure out how to take apart to grease; also a Lewmar #6 single speed mast winch with the same problem. Any information concerning maintaining these winches would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....

Look on the top of the winch near the place where the handle is inserted. What appears to be a chrome trim piece around the hole is actually a spring clip. Like finding the end of the scotch tape when it's stuck to the roll, you feel carefully along until you find the edge, then stick a knife or small screwdriver under the edge and peel it off. Once the clip is out the barrel lifts right off.
