I'm thinking of replacing my Lewmar 30 bronze (original equipment?) 2 speed winches on my CD31 with self tailing equipment. I'm wondering if the bolt hole pattern (5 holes) is common with other winch manufacturers and if not, would new Lewmar models have the same bolt hole pattern as the current winches? Thanks in advance.

I replaced the standard orginal equipment Lewmar 7s with new Lewmar 16ST self tailers on my CD27. Because the 16ST are bigger, the base of the winch is bigger. I had to drill new holes in the bronze winch platform for the new winch. I suspect that unless the diameter of the new winch is exactly the same as the old, the holes are not identical. The holes may not line up even if the bases are the same diameter. By the way. If you are going up in size, make sure the new winch will fit on the winch platform and that there is enough room for the larger winch to freely turn. I almost made that mistake.

We will be replacing the winches on our "new" 31 also. We are moving the new bronze self tailing Lewmar 40s from our CD28 to the 31. We did have to drill new holes in the 28 so we are anticipating having to do the same on the 31. Just be sure to install sturdy backing plates under the winch pedestals.
Where is you boat and what is the hull#?

Thanks for the info. Our CD 31, hull number 32, is bearthed in Havelock, NC on the Pamlico Sound.
