autopilot for edson worm gear?

Post by alonzo jones »

Does anyone know if the Simrad wp30 (navico wp300cx) or the Raytheon st4000+ wheel pilot will work with the Edson worm gear steering on my '79 30 ketch?
Seems it would be mounted backwards from how it would mount on
a pedistal. Can these things be told to "think" backwards? If not, what are my options?
Thanks.

Alonzo,

I have zero experience with the worm gear or the autopilots you mention, but I can tell you that it is very likely that if you reverse the wires to the drive motor, the unit will "think backwards."

Good luck,

Ken

I don't know either, but a few pieces of the puzzle that may help. . .
The aft end of the Edson worm gear shaft is keyed to accept a sprocket for a chain-drive autopilot. The Edson tech guy seemed to be ready to discuss options. I would check them out for suggested approaches. (Yes, the worm-gear steering assembly is still available.) Let us know how you solve this problem . . . my semi-elegant solution was to buy a different boat. . .

Good Luck, Dale

Thanks Mike, et al:
I've ordered a Simrad WP5000 belt drive autopilot (Boat/US $500). I figure that I can make that work. Enquiries to Edson,
West Marine (no longer sells simrad and Simrad yielded no info about running the self contained unit backwards.

Alonzo: I installed a Raytheon 4000 several years ago works fine and I wouldn't want to cruse without it.
good luck
Fred
