We have had a lot of rain lately and I noticed some water damage in the teak boards at the companion way I followed Jim's direction and pulled off all the teak boards. There was not much bedding compound. They didn't take long to remove, only about an hour and a half. I brought them all home and stripped and sanded them last night.. Today I will go back to the boat and install them. I have a few questions: Some of the boards look perfectly good,why should I strip them? since these boards have been previously varnished Why should I thin the varnish so much like advised, 50/50 first coat, 30/ 70 2nd coat etc. I wonder if I need to fill the old holes for the fasteners or just reuse them. finally, it looks like that originally the boards were varnished in place. I thought of varnishing them on the bench before installation,at least one or two coats, That curved board has a dark mark where a name plate goes so i won't try to sand it off.

Re-use the old fastener holes if possible. If you feel the need to add a couple extra, feel free. Since you have everything in your workshop I’d take advantage of the opportunity and put a few coats of varnish on while access is easy. After you bung the fastening holes you’ll have to add a couple more coats once everything is back in place.
Those pieces of trim which appear to be in fine shape may not look as good as the rest in a short time so my advice would be to use this opportunity to refinish them all, at the same time, for appearances sake. Also use plenty of the caulk/bedding of your choice when you reinstall. The last thing you want is to not fill all the gaps/voids and be back where you started.
You will be so happy with yourself when drips are a distant memory. Nice job!

Got it all back together. It was easier than i thought. I have a couple regrets: I put a big blob of calking on the inside corners. Im afraid it might not be good enough. I thought I saw moisture the next morning. I should have put two or three horizontal beads across those corners. We’ll see. Also The store bought wood plugs are too light. I dont have a drill press and its kinda hard to mane them with a regular drill. Well now I can confidently remove and refinish the combings. I want to put a cap on them like “FarReach”

Thanks. John. New shoulder is great. The other is horrible. Might not go to Mexico If I go it will be Feb 15. Same as last year. I cant even get good sleep at home. I need to get up every two hrs snd put pain creme and take tylonol
