Leomas new Beta 16
Almost done with the install. Still need to hook up the new racor filter , the instrument panel, and a few other things.. the v-drive is strange It's a ZF M15.. the shaft runs all the way thru and connects with that coupling at the front of the photo. I have to ask the mechanics but I think that is where you use feeler gauges to align the shaft??? Surprisingly We didn't need to modify the shaft at all. We just had to restore the stringers to the original setup . I wasted alot of money fooling with that old Volvo. Oh well at least I got plenty of use out of her.
I hope they can secure all those hoses over away form the oil dipstick and the pump. It looks like it will be difficult to use that pump for changing oil. It on the right side under those hoses

Nice! When the installation is complete you will have a dependable auxiliary and Leoma will have a new lease on life.

Looks great. I installed a Beta in a previous boat, it was a top notch engine and Beta Marine was a great company to work with.
Did you modify the stringers or go with the Beta mount/stringer option?

Re: Leomas new Beta 16
After doing much modifying of the stringers for the old Volvo. This photo is of what we did for the Volvo. We ended up restoring everything back to the original setup ( see previous photo) They just have a 3/8' shim under the forward mounts. I like how the mount adjusting nuts are centered on the studs unlike the first attempt by the previous boatyard. They left them up all the way to the max. The after mount nuts are lower. It seems to me that the motor would be more secure and not sway as much if they were topped out. Here is a photo of what We did for the Volvo last year.. Yea I'm kinda dumb.. I spent a lot of money .. At least I helped some people be employed.Skipd wrote: Did you modify the stringers or go with the Beta mount/stringer option?

It might be possible to move the pump from it's engine mount to a more convenient location.JD-MDR wrote:I hope they can secure all those hoses over away form the oil dipstick and the pump. It looks like it will be difficult to use that pump for changing oil. It on the right side under those hoses

He texted me and confirmed I have the upgraded 75 amp alternator and he is working on moving that pump

J.D. - I've always wondered - how do you service the stuffing box with one of those V-drives? I'm thinking
it must be tough as the engine is partly over it.

Re: Leomas new Beta 16
Originally the stuffing box was half buried in the glass .. I extended it about 8". It has been easy to access with a plumbers tool. It seems a little tight now. I check it out tomorrow and find out if i can still get a grip on the it. I was feeling around the other day and it seems like it will not be too bad.Frenchy wrote:J.D. - I've always wondered - how do you service the stuffing box with one of those V-drives? I'm thinking

Re: Leomas new Beta 16
Frenchy is right. I cant get under to service the stuffing box. Mechanic managed but said this boat is a prime candidate for a dripless type( maybe next haulout). I was a little disappointed : we tried for a sea trial yesterday but prop was hitting rudder. They took prop in to refinish and made adjustments including a damper between the couplings. That allowed them to push the shaft and prop in a little more . Seatrial went well this morning.Frenchy wrote:J.D. - I've always wondered - how do you service the stuffing box with one of those V-drives? I'm thinking

I thought we had this conversation on what order the prop lock nut and jamming nut go on. Both the diver and the mechanic wouldnt hear of it. They wouldnt even look at the link. Jim posted for us. Oh well. Ill reverse it next haulout. ( thin locknut first , right?). Also. I only had a 100 amp fuse on the battery terminal( supposed to be 250). They blew the fuse and told me it was ridiculous to have those. I went out and got what WM had (200 amp).Ill put it on myself after they leave. They moved the manual oil pump. Im happy with them. But not about to argue anything. I can fix those things myself. I may haulout in Mexico.

Re: Leomas new Beta 16
Two times the engine stalled and yesterday at the Santa Barbara dock it wouldnt start right away. There isa problem with air getting in the lines. Beta mechanic offered to drive the 100 mi but I told him to wait. I will go down there at least to Marina Del Rey. He will drive the 15 mi or so and go thru the fuel system. Im back at Ventura now, going to MDR Monday

Re: Leomas new Beta 16
You always need a sea trial to expose any issues with major systems. There are always some form of growing pains before full readiness is achieved. Best of luck! I bet it’s a minor issue and the tech will cure the hiccup!
