Leoma Update 6/10/22
Got complete shoulder replacement last week. So I'll be disable for a while. I ordered a re-manufactured reverse gear off ebay. It arrived safely. I need to hire a mechanic to install it. I think I got the right one. There are different type MS gears for the MD7A . I got one from a guy in WA. who just sold another with attached Walter v-drive. I know that would've been the correct one. He assured me this is correct with the centric flange.(2nd
Anyway Im not worried about it.. I am posting a notice on the Marina board for crew to help me run the boat for local cruises. I hope I meet some nice people maybe evan some to accompany me south again next October
I didnt bother asking the yard to cover this work under warranty. It cost me a lot for them to warranty the motor mount job.
I really do think that their faulty work caused my gear to be burnt up
photo) However the other supplier in EU says I need the eccentric flange..>??? (ABOVE PHOTO) I had my gear out last year and I dont remember having the eccentric flange.. I hope I go it right . I think so. Ebay says I can return it up to 30 days but when I mentioned it to the guy he implied that He hopes I have more stuff to buy. I got the feeling he only intends to give credit.Anyway Im not worried about it.. I am posting a notice on the Marina board for crew to help me run the boat for local cruises. The EU supplier was wrong (See previous post). They told me I needed the eccentric gear. The guy on Ebay in Kent WA was right and I got the correct Gearbox (centric ). Yay. Installed it yesterday . I will button things up today and go for a sea trial Saturday. I need to take the mechanic with me .I am really disabled from the shoulder surgery. I hope after a couple weeks therapy I can take her out for a few days. I ll work this gear enough to be sure it will be ok for another trip down to Mexico. Supposedly it is a remanufactured unit. I definately paid for one.

Re: Leoma Update 6/10/22
Can’t figure it out! New gear is in but can’t get alignment closer than .0045”. But the yard just reset my motor mounts and reinforced the stringers. I’m sure they lined the engine up with the shaft before they tapped the down bolts. Something seems to have shifted. I noticed on the cruise south very loud creaking, worrisome in fact. It seemed to be at the floor liner where it meets the hull near the partial bulkhead between the galley and salon. Or I wonder if the SanFrancisco yard did a bad job installing the new shaft log (5 yrs ago)This is really making me sick. I think I could have bought a new engine by now. But if there is a structural problem. It would still be the same. I just had a survey and he found some cosmetic repairs but no structural to the hull.

Did they align it with the boat in or out of the water? If it was done out of the water, sometimes the hull shifts when it is continuously supported by the water compared to being supported just on a keel block and some jack stands.
Smooth sailing,
Jim

Thanks Jim..I will make sure I point that out on Monday. Last month they adjusted it on the hard before launch. Now they are trying to adjust it in the water at the dock. They want to reinstall the old gearbox to see if that one is still aligned. Then they can say its my fault because the different gearboxes. although I wouldn't have burnt up my old gear if they had done it right in the first place. But I bet the old gearbox won't be aligned either. I don't think they centered the engine good . And last month when I was overseeing them the yard boss had to tell me they needed me off the boat. I'm really sick of this.. I really understand why so many like "JS" insist on doing all their own work. These guys got no conscience. They just keep tally up the hours. I'll see what they find Monday.

Re: Leoma Update 6/10/22
Reinstalled the old gear and shaft lines up fine. I can’t believe the difference. The rebuilt gear has to go all the way to the side adjustment on the slotted mounts and still can’t get close enough. We are debating taking parts out of rebuilt gear and putting in the old gear case. I dont like that idea. Parts might not fit or whatever. I want them to pull the engine and reset correctly. I finally let them know how disappointed I was. If they had used the correct motor mounts in he first place. They wouldn’t have needed the new engine brackets, or to rebuild the the engine bed and I wouldn’t have burnt up my reverse gear. I know this yard has new owners and the old crew did the work. But the invoice is on the new company They have to stand by the work. I’m OK though. Ive been getting Some easy jobs that I can do evan though I’m in recovery for my shoulder replacement. It’s only been 3 weeks. I have to be careful

Re: Leoma Update 6/10/22
Problem solved.. After much study we found the old gear had been brazed at the mount flange.. I've had enough . I told them to put it back in as it was .. I am ordering a new Beta . Hopefully the 16.. Not sure if it will fit in the ketch. might have to use the 14.
Here is a photo of my engine bed.. I'm not sure what will have to be modified but I want to encapsulate the aluminum plates with fiberglass so it is nice and clean like "Far Reach". Maybe thats not feasable.
Dang My nice rechargeable mag lite went down the hole by the shaft log.. I knew I should have put screen or something over those. I can't get it out.

Ugh. I get agitated just reading about it. That's just nuts JD.
Can you get the mag light out with one of the long skinny pinchers? Or some two sided tape on a stick? If it went in, there has to be a way to get it out. And why are those slots there behind the stuffing box? Do they lead some where so water can be got out. Must be a sump lower down and forward I can't can't see in the photo?
Seems like you have done everything humanly possible to get that engine and transmission running right. You deserve a medal for perseverance alone. If you can swing a new engine/tranny you will praise God every time you hit the start button and it leaps into action. A new Beta is a great piece of machinery.

Can't wait.. Hope to have it all ready by Christmas when I plan to go south again..
the flashlight isn't visible. Someone suggested I try the shop vac. Maybe I can flush it out with a water hose..
I guess those drain holes are so deck leaks etc. go to the bilge instead of the engine tray
