Wanted to buy: tiller strap and cap for my CD 25D

Post by Riverleigh »

I lost my steering (since repaired) on an outing last fall. I should have had an emergency tiller. (My rule is that if I am prepared for it, it probably won't happen again.) I think a tiller strap and cap would have avoided a tow. Let me know if this is the correct solution. It would be helpful if you know what size tiller strap and cap I should be looking for.
Thanks,
Doug

Can I ask what happened to cause you to think having a spare tiller is necessary? Maybe we can learn something....

Well... I'm guessing he really wants an emergency tiller since a fair number of CD25Ds actually have a wheel vs tiller???
Brings back my observation that in 55+ years of sailing, I have yet to see a tiller boat that carries an emergency wheel!

CD 25D had a wheel option? I had no idea.

From the 1982 sales brochure it appears the CD25D came "both ways" vs the CD27 tiller only?

And the CD28 was tiller vs the CD30 being wheel? but I'm guessing there were options the buyer could select.

As some on this board may recall, I spent several years searching for my Cape Dory 25D. I personally inspected at least 15-20 of these models and viewed many, many more from website photos before finding my "Sophia Loren".

In all those years and searches I never inspected one Cape Dory 25D that had wheel steering. I did view one CD 25D on a website listing that had a wheel installed. I believe it was located somewhere in NY or Long Island area. I believe the listing said it was changed from tiller to wheel by a prior owner but I am not positive about this.

To the best of my knowledge, Cape Dory Yachts never installed a wheel steering system on the CD 25D. I also do not believe it was offered as a factory "option" although I suppose Mr. Valvolotis would have installed one at owner's request and for the right price.

As a practical matter, the cockpit of the CD 25D is too small for a functional wheel. Also the space under the cockpit aft of the Yanmar diesel is too small to properly install a steering quadrant that can be reasonably accessed for maintenance or repair.
Fair winds,

Roberto

Sorry about the delayed response. Yes, my 25D has an Edson post and wheel. I lost steering in somewhat heavy weather. Apparently, one of the cables came off one of the blocks. Note to self: check the cable tension every Spring. I am not sure if an emergency tiller would have helped since it felt as if the cable was jammed. But, as I said earlier, if I prepare for it, it won't happen.
Thanks so much for the feedback.
