How secure is your prop?

I took three random photos of props today on boats which are hauled close to Orion. Anyone notice any issues with the methods used to secure the props to the shafts?

The first one is corroded enough that it will never come off. The second one looks like a new boat so it must be right. The third one needs a little something more. Maybe bigger barnacles.

The right nut sequence is counter intuitive, Steve.

Jam backwards on the first, the second the pins are not tight to the shaft so they can snag stuff. The third, is that a c clip or nothing I can't really tell and the jam nut is backwards. Dennis

Also I think there should be a flat washer against the prop. The third needs to bend the cotter pin and don’t see a zinc.
OK, I just looked it up and found that the jam nut goes on first and they have no flat washer.

This is a wonderful website hosted by Maine Sail.....an occasional contributor to our forum. The attachment contains a great explanation of how and why to secure your prop correctly.

Steve is correct in that it seems counterintuitive but the proper sequence is the half height nut goes against the prop hub and the full size nut goes on last. I encourage everyone to look at the attachment and take a peek at how your prop is attached to verify it is to standard.

As a preemptive notification I wish to state that a “locked or free wheeling” prop has been taken under consideration by the International Society of Propeller Engineers and deemed to be irrelevant to this discussion.

I was under the impression the locked vs freewheeling prop is always relevant to any discussion on this board!!!!
