I'm with John. A leaking port after 35 or more years is a pretty good record. and the Teak veneered plywood had nothing to do with the leak or hiding the leak. To me it is another one of those personal preferences. When I bought MOONDANCE 7 years ago the PO had rebeded the starboard ports and left of the teak veneered plywood but left the teak on the port side. He did a poor job as well because one port still leaked and as John said it was hidden by the liner not the teak because there was no longer teak there. Long story short I like the look of the teak around the ports very much and purchased a sheet of 1/4 teak veneered plywood and replaced it. Oh I also rebelled all of the starboard port that the PO had done very poorly indeed.

The butyl tape worked well on the trim rings. It oozed out for about two days. Then trimmed up nicely.
