CD 27 Wheel to tiller conversion?

Don't forget to snap some photos while you work on that boat project, then share them here.

CD 27 Wheel to tiller conversion?

Post by wanderer316 »

Hello folks,

I am new to this forum and am in the process of hunting for a CD 27. I found what looks like a very nice boat locally, but it has wheel steering. I prefer to have a tiller and would like to get some idea of what would be involved in converting a boat like that to tiller steering sometime down the road. I can see where the head of the rudder post is, just under a cap just aft of the pedestal. Have any of you done a project like this. Is it simply a matter of removing the pedestal and attaching a tiller to the rudder post head? If so, what kind of hardware would be involved in a project like this?

Thanks very much.

Hi Steve, There was just a post on the forum about this very topic by someone looking for a CD 30. There has also been a fair amount written about it so you should do a forum search. Lots of valuable advice there.

It's doable. I did it on my CD 36 Far Reach. It's not difficult but it is time consuming. Depending on how you do it you are probably looking at $1k-2kif you do all the work. Here is a link to the details of how we did it. http://www.farreachvoyages.com/projects ... rsion.html

Since you have not bought the boat yet my first response is to find a boat with a tiller. I suspect there are a number of them out there.

If you really want a tiller (I did) do not be deterred but do be prepared for the task.

That was exactly what I was looking for, John. Thanks very much for that.

Nice website, and beautiful work on Far Reach, by the way.
