Folks, my CD33 came with a Universal Diesel #5424 Model 30 and a 2" heat exchanger, which sits at the back of the engine almost above the tranny. During longer motoring runs, the engine would overheat. Obviously the 2" h.e. was not enough... I was fortunate that a fellow CD-er sold me his old 3", which I refurbished and installed appropriately. It lasted for almost 10 years. Be aware that the end caps of these little monsters corrode and start leaking... I ended up with a supply of spares, since my refurbished h.e. was not in the best condition and the caps did not seal properly -of course I had the proper gaskets-... Finally it was time to get a new one. That is the one I ordered from Mr. Cool, a 3" heat exchanger. They ship it unpainted. I put on 2 coats of primer, made sure it was really clean inside and out, and painted it the color of my engine... I put in the pencil zincs before installing and my engine has never overheated again.
I also replaced my old and plastic raw water filter by the new one you see in the same photo... big difference.

Re: Heat Exchanger
I replaced my engine a couple months after I bought my boat in 2006 so I have a 2007 M25-XPB which had the 3" heat exchanger from the factory.

Apparently you should buy the model with the "CN" suffix for use in salt water.Jim Walsh wrote:Raw water is pumped through a heat exchanger so that statement seems absurd.Capt Hook wrote:Jim,
I may be looking to replace/upgrade the heat exchanger on my CD-31. I'm not sure if it has a 2" or 3". I think I'll be getting up close and personal soon. But the link says not for use in salt water. Would this still be the item I'd want?
