Where can I get a boom crutch for my Cape Dory 10
Where can I get a boom crutch for my Cape Dory 10
i am looking for some advice about a boom crutch for my Cape Dory 10. My boat sits at a dock and I cannot get there every day. I don't like to leave the boat open to the weather, so I'd like to get a boom tent. But I'd need a boom crutch to make the whole thing work. Suggestions?

I made one from a piece of wood then epoxied pins that I cut off brass oarlocks into each end. The crutch fits beam to beam in the aft oar sockets. I shaped the wood to have a curve and cut three notches for the mast and other spares. I also cut some 2" - 3" holes in a few places because I thought it would look good but found they were ideal for threading bungees through to hold the spars in place and hold the oars in place. I lucked into that:)
You can see it in the mess during my transom reconstruction project.

Cool! Glad I could help.
When epoxying the pins in place, I did one at a time and put the board in place while it set up. This ensured correct pin alignment. I also put tape around the socket and grease on the pin to make sure epoxy did not set up in places it did not belong.

What year is your CD10? I have the same double hull version and understand that they were limited in production. I also just finished one of the solid battens to go with the others that actiually have batten pockets. I will use your ideas in order to make a place for the oars etc. I would love to see any photos of your CD10 during and after the restoration. I will be placing some images in the "project" section sometime in the next few weeks. She is a sweet rowing boat - haven't tried sailing it yet however.

Try as we might, I have not found a reliable way to determine the year.
I have enjoyed sailing mine, once in a small craft warning. Late last year I blew the sail out and have not made time to sew together my Sailrite sail kit yet. I got a bit distracted fixing and sailing my CD-36. I named the 36 "Nautica", and plan to name the CD-10 "Naughty".
