Hi Warren K,

Good to hear from you. Its been a long time since your last post. When we don't hear from someone in a while, we tend to think of bad things that can happen.

BTW: Sine Qua Non looks to be in impeccable shape, (as usual).

Thanks for your concern! I had trouble logging on for a while that Cathy promptly resolved as soon as I got around to asking her about it. Then my waterfront house on the south shore of long island and hurricane sandy "had some issues!" I am out of my house since the storm but we are getting it back together so should be home in a month.

Sine Qua Non thanks you for the compliment but that is an old photo. I have since stripped the teak and refinished her with 3 coats of cetol natural and then 3 coats of cetol gloss. She looks like dynamite!

Shinok.
I've got the same set up Andy has. I do most of my sailing single handed and use mine quite often, es specially when motoring a long distance. The tiller pilots have come a long way since the days of past and can be run via. your GPS or your wind instruments if you have them.

They like consistent wind both in direction and strength and have a tough time keeping up with heavy following seas (so do I!).. A balanced sail plan helps tremendously with power consumption and the conditions in which you are using it will play a roll also with consumption. You will definitely know when it is working as you will hear every adjustment it makes in course. You can adjust the sensitivity as well.

They are a great tool to have at your disposal. If you are thinking of extended voyages I would look for wind vane system.

I don't have cockpit cushions. have fun!

Good to know, we're definitely going to be investing in one soon, I just want to see what the most convenient and least obstructive way of mounting it is. I'm glad to hear it's effective, though.

My understanding is that they pull average about 5-6 amps, is that accurate?

We are in a bit of a strange situation because we don't have a diesel and our outboard can only make so much power while it's running. I've been trying to find a decent way to keep the batteries charged on long(er) trips with the a/p. I've been looking at wind generators but I can't seem to find any reviews on recent models (last I can find is ~5 yrs ago) and how much power they'll make it low wind situations (We're in FL, the wind isn't always that high) vs solar.

How do you guys keep a/p going with that kind of power draw?

I have the same autopilot on Scotia, a CD 27. I also have the pushpit-mounted wind transducer, which is great (and I just had it repbuilt). My set up is a bit differnt and the PO was a genius. i will look for a photo, but basically he affixed the pin hole to a small aluminum box he made up (about 2x4x6"), which is then firmly affixed via two threaded bolts with the threaded component permanetly mounted below the teak in the combing. I don't have the fabirication skills, but i could probably replicate it from hardwood. The whole shooting match comes off (except the small threaded compnent in the combing) and so is nice. Much sturdier i should think than a hole in the locker top.

Its been very reliable and has worked well for me!! But frankly, I don't use it all that much!
