Corroded Steering Bracket

Post by Olli Wendelin »

Hello All,

Does anyone have a photo of the bracket under the worm gear steering on an older CD30? This is a steel bracket in the wheel house in the cockpit. It connects the rudder tube to the back of the cockpit. Mine is rusted away and I will be fabricating a new one out of stainless. Any pictures or dimensions would be appreciated.

if you click under 'where to look' above and get into the manuals, on pg.48 of the '78cd25-30 brochure there is a simple drawing of what that bracket looks like from the side elevation. The base was glassed into the hull bottom so you should be able to determine it's width dimension from that evidence. Hopefully what remains of yours will fill in the gaps........better yet maybe someone will measure or photograph theirs.
I removed mine years ago for pedestal conversion. good luck

Ron,

I do have the manual you quoted. The picture is more concept than reality. My bracket is bolted to the cockpit aft wall. Also the rudder tube extends almost to the steering gear and is fiberglassed to the bracket.

A few years back I built a new aft bracket (which is glassed to the hull) out of stainless. I have a line drawing of it if anyone is interested.

Check out this thread from the archives. http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic ... 86#p130386 I had the exact same problem on my (former) CD30. The photos were posted using the old HTML method, so the photo link doesn't work any more. I'll fix it when I get the chance. In the meantime, you can cut and paste the link into your browser to see the photos.

Just noticed worm gear reference

Sorry, I just noticed the reference to worm gear steering. Mine was an Edson pedestal. The thread from the archives won't help you.
