Drive time to the Boat
Moderator: Jim Walsh
Well, I take the metro and the bus
I live downtown, and I walk or take the subway everywhere. It became clear to me that the only thing I was using the car for was back and forth to the boat. I was worried that I NEEDED the car for that, so I tried it out for a summer before I ditched the car. It turned out to be no problem.
Financially, I rent my downtown parking spot for more than it costs me to "moor and store" the boat. That means now I get free year-round boat storage. On top of that, the money I used to spend operating the car is now an ongoing source of boat bucks, beer money, and other higher priority 'lifestyle' expenses.
It takes 60-90 minutes, which is probably 15-20 minutes longer than using the car. It also takes a bit of planning in the spring and fall, but I feel like it's worth it.
The point was to simplify life, not to be an eco-freako, but I must admit I like things better this way.

Drive time
Here in land-locked North Texas it's 25 minutes for the 13 miles.
Wisconsin to Pasadena, MD
Subject line says it all. It's 815 miles from our home to the boat. It takes about 12h 15m. We used to drive out 3-4 times a season, but the last 3 seasons we stay several months. 3 seasons ago we drove only once and stayed over 4 months.

Two and 1/2 Minute Walk
It's a 2.5 minute walk, which corresponds to Bober's Coefficient of 200 feet/minute. It takes 45 - 60 minutes to get out to the open Bay. We can usually sail in or out, sometimes both, depending on the wind. It's 18 miles by water to the boatyard for winter storage, or a five-mile / ten-minute drive.

no traffic...
The route I travel never has a traffic issue, it's my respect for my fellow human beings which makes it a 50 minute drive. To be truthful it's radar which keeps it from being a 30 minute jaunt.

New sub-thread -- "time to get underway?"
Never mind the time it takes to get to the boat. How long does it take you to get underway? I bet the majority would say double the time it takes to get there.
How many times did you go back home to get something you forgot?
Yeah, it happens.

Driving 2.9 miles, 5 minutes (unless all 3 lights go red...)
Walking: 2 miles, 20 minutes (without any "stuff")
Underway in 10 minutes or less when solo, with "crew" ya never know!

You're right, it takes us 35 or 40 minutes to get to the boat and an hour to get ready.Ray Garcia wrote:Never mind the time it takes to get to the boat. How long does it take you to get underway? I bet the majority would say double the time it takes to get there.

Rhapsody can be underway in 10 minutes, unless I have to load stores/ice/crew.....
