Up the intercoastalwe go
It is tuesday evening and mystic Rose is securly anchored in a qiet calm anchorage on the south side if Daytona. We left Lighthouse Point saturday morning and have traveled 220 moles on four days. So far no incidents or problems, expect to be out of florida by end of thursday.
Had the chance to raise the sails today for first time coming thru the indian river and mosquito lagoon, attained 6-7 knots with engine and sails at 2000rpms. What a great day, 67 miles. Only 980 milrs to go.
Over and out

Thank you Zeida. Tuesday we traveled from Cocoa Beach to Daytona, a beautiful ride thru the northern indian river and then the Mosquito lagoon (very near the ocean and many sand islands and scrub brush). Anchored southeast of the Memorial bridge in a very quiet calm spot.
Up at 7am on Wed and off to St Augustine. Northern Fla along here is beginning to look a biy remote, waterway very winding, marshland all around, and must pay close attention to the charts and the GPS. Learned this the hard way just North of the Matanzas inlet in a very shoaly and confusing curve in the waterway. The markers had been moved to define a new channel, but the old markers were still there too, while trying to figure it out we went "BUMP" :cry and were hard aground for about an hour waiting for the tide to come in, then off again.
Now in St Augustine anchored south of the Bridge of Lions, Thursday morning, we were going to make for the border today, but alas, there is a heavy wind advisory out all day and some tricky navigation to be done around the inlet, so we decided to make this a playday in St Augustine, as well as refuel, waterup and provision.

forgot to say that we ran aground even though we were watching the gps and looking at the charts....I believe in really paying attention to your instincts, not doing any ICW in the eve!!!!

Headed for the Magothy river on the Chesapeake to spend the summer sailing the bay and helping my daughter in some house renovations.
How right you are about diligence, I ran her aground on wednesday just north of matanzas inlet where there is some very bad shoaling and the markers were moved. By the time i figured out whatr was goin on we were on bottom. Sat there for about an hour luckily awaiting an incoming tide had a beer, smoked a cigar. Coulda been alot worse, now i will slow way down when anything doesn't look right.
Today we stuck in St Augustine due to heavy winds, tomorrow looks better and we plan to head for the border.

Georgia on my mind
Tonite is Sat nite and Mystic Rose is resting at anchor on the Dupine river at mile marker 650 in Georgia, We have made our way thru St Audustine, Fernadina beach St Marys sound and deep into Georgia. Beautiful sailing and countryside.
I hope everyone who owns a CD appreciates what a wonderful boat you have. I have had people comment on the beauty of Mystic Rose at every port. One guy at Fernandina set up a very professional camera on the dock to capture her against the setting sun (it was truly beautiful) while I happened to be standing behind him watching. I asked him what he was doing and he said he was trying to get the setting sun in the frame with that beautiful sailboat out there. I later told him about her and he has promised to send me the pictures. Now mind you there were alot of boatst in the harbor, needless to say I glowed.
Looks like we will make So Carolina from Fort Lauderdale in just nine days, with headsail and about 2200rpms we make 7 knots easily.
Happy Sailing

Darrell & Janet.. it's great to follow your trip up the ICW.
Please keep up the updates. I wonder if you are keeping a sort of log of the trip; times and arrivals of departures, anchorages, shoals, route, etc. because it will be extremely useful when Bandolera finally makes her northern cruise.. I hope that if you get that photo, you post it!. Or you can email it to me directly and I will post it for you.
My email: zeida.cecilia@gmail.com Will be looking forward to getting that picture

End of Day 9 - CD-30 Mystic Rose docked at the Downtown Marina in Beaufort, S.C. as she cruises north on the ICW, having departed from Ft.Lauderdale, Fl. en route to the Chesapeake. They will reprovision, do laundry, clean the boat, etc. They are having a very good trip so far.

Zeida you are great, I love you......
We just got back from dinner in Beaufert,SC a very brauty place. Janet just finished her log entry to all our frirnds and you have the picture on the board already. You are great, after all I ain't no OJ and could never get these pics up.
I sit here for the first time on a dock. all plugged in with the stereo playing BB King and Lyle Lovett (my favorites) after having a couple or was it three scotches and checking the emails and the board.
This being at a dock is very nice. Got all power and security. Ton
ite I will sleep very well.
This going up the intercoastal, I know sounds like a road trip up I95, but I want you all to know that there are dangers out there. Traversing these Sounds in Georgia and the Carolinas can be dangerous. I have seen five foot seas and 30 to 35 knot winds. It is good to be in a Cape Dory/
Anyway. I gotta go to sleep, goonite all

This is a great education for us northerners
Keep the posts coming. Personally, I know next to nothing about the ICW.

GA & SC ICW are the prettiest
I, too, am enjoying this thread and look forward to learning more about the ICW "up North". I have been sailing my CD-25 out of Savannah for 30 years and during that time have traveled the ICW from the St Johns River up to North Myrtle Beach. I think the ICW from Fernandina Beach up to Charleston is the prettiest. Almost all of that stretch is natural with very little dredged "ditch". I have heard / read lots of negative comments over the years about difficulties in this area, but it's just not that bad. We do have 6 - 7 ft tides that can cause quite an adverse current sometimes, but they do go the other way too. Also, if you ever do go aground, the bottom is almost universally mud or soft sand, so no damage - and that tide will return sooner or later. All that negativity aside, you just cannot beat the natural beauty of the marshes and undeveloped islands along the GA coast. Just pay attention to the ICW charts and channel markers, along with tide info, and you will not have any major problems - just do not be in a hurry and never try to cut a corner! I look forward to more comments from this thread and I am sorry I did not "speak" Mystic Rose when she passed through here the other day.

Mystic Rose left Tom's Creek in S.C. today at 8 am on her way to Charleston. She took the picture above of the S/V "Decoy"-they are right behind- as they left the anchorage to enter the ICW channel. A full report tonight.
