Sloop to cutter again?

Post by Will Angus »

When I purchased my CD30 the staysail boom and staysail forestay had been removed. I would like to get the cutter plan back in action and talked with my local rigger about a new forestay. He went mumbling on about a running backstay. I dismissed it at the time, but have started to wonder if the original plan included a running backstay? Is the rig supported when flying a storm sail from the staysail forestay?

Thanks for your advice and I Look forward to hearing from you.

Have you checked the owners manual for a drawing of the original rig?

The CD30 did not have a running backstay. IMHO the rig is well supported with everything flying - I never noticed any issues with staysail up.

Skip is right.......no running backstay on the CD30. On my boat I did add a backing plate to the staysail fitting below deck, they used fender washers and I could see some minor crazing of the liner so, I beefed it up, .
