Cutlass bearing size -- CD 27?

Post by Steve Behnke »

Does anyone know the interior and exterior diameters of the stern tube, and proper length and diameter for the cutlass bearing for the CD 27 (1980)?

Boat is in the water, and I'd like to have the part ordered and on hand before hauling it and doing some work this spring.

Thanks.

Cutlass bearing

Post by trapper »

Hi Steve,

We just replaced Saga's (25D). I think the size for yours should be listed in the owner's manual. I think it may be "blackfish". Good luck!

Morse "Blackfish"

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

The cutlass bearing model for our boats (1" shaft) is the Morse Blackfish. If you GOOGLE "Morse Blackfish" you'll find what you're looking for. Compare prices. There's a wide difference in pricing, for example, West Marine wants over $100 for the Blackfish bearing and Boatman's I-netmarine.com only wants $56.13.

According to my owners manual "All CDY stuffing boxes use 1/4" waxed flax packing." And that's what we've used since we've owned the boat. It's a 1" shaft so the diameter is 1". The circumference (the distance around the shaft) equals pi x d. pi is 3.14 so you'll need 3.14" of packing to go around the shaft once. You should be able to get three 3.14" strips of packing inside the stuffing box.

By the way, the stuffing box for the rudder also uses that same 1/4" packing.

PS: By the way, in 2008 we replaced the Spartan stuffing box with a PYI dripless shaft seal.

Good info, thank you. I was lucky- was able to easily adjust to the proper drip because wasn't looking forward to repacking in the water ( It's cold in Marathon). Jimmy
