Post by Mark Yashinsky »

OMG, I JUST WENT OVER TO THE DARK (but fun) SIDE!!

And to mgphl62 (Bill Cochrane), on, "And those that know hexadecimal, and those that don't.", what about those that know binary and those that dont??? Thats ideal for this, but is 1 assigned that know, or dont know?

Oooooo... that was good!

We're up to four pages and counting, which proves nothing.

Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea

Post by Oswego John »

Good one Steve.

Anyone ever hear the nautical meaning of the above term? There seems to be several variations of the cause of the term.

Another related saying on the same theme is "The devil to pay".

To aid us in the understanding of these terms or sayings, the devil was an arbitrary seam in the hull of an old wooden ship. Some say it was the seam between the garboard and the keel, while others feel that the devil was the seam or joint between the upper hull and the deck.

When you pay the devil, the word pay is derived from the French langusge word meaning tar or pitch.

There are so many words and sayings in use today that have had their origins mutated from early nautical real life situations.

Mark try searching for "Freewheeling propellers: the chopper theory"

It was at least 15 pages long and would still be going strong if it hadn't been cruelly chopped off in the prime of its life by Cathy.
