We used to have a Yanmar 8 (YM??). On that model, and I would expect yours, the engine oil did NOT circulate to the transmission. There was a hex nut (1/2" or larger) on top of the transmission case. The nut is the cap of the dipstick.
Hope this helps.

I just bought a 1977 CD27 also. I got a manual from Mastry Engine Center in St.Pete. www.mastry.com 727-522-9471.

www.yanmar.com. Gary is Technical Advisor to the tech service group.
The engine oil (crankcase) and the transmission oil (gearbox) are separate entities.

The motor oil and transmission are seperate, with their own dipsticks, but you can use the same type of oil in both. I have a Yanmar YSB-12 on my boat. The manuals for the YSB, YSE, and YSM series are still available from Yanmar. There is an owners manual, parts manual, and service manual.
