sorry to hijack this thread

I really didn't set out to hijack this thread. Steve, trust me, I tried absolutely everything to get that $@&# lantern down before resigning myself that I had to sail with the lantern up at the top of the mast. I tried the boathook idea, plus a few other more desperate ideas that I won't go into...

Downhaul on a Lantern

Dick, Funny you should ask. Yes, there's a story behind this one. The lantern weighs less than the halyard rope weighs. It's basically a scale. The heavy end wins every time. If I had simply attached a downhaul to the lantern I could have simply pulled it back down. Since I failed to take this seemi...

Joe & Dider

Joe - The moorings at Monhegan are owned by lobster men. As you know, lobster men tolerate us - barely. I think one of them is owned by Hardy Boats, but I'm not sure. I didn't even try to pick up a mooring. I actually was able to set the hook, but the achorage was highly exposed and it would have ma...

Okay, I'll bite

1. Never, ever, EVER run a lantern up a halyard (anchor light) without a downhaul attached. 2. Boon Island Light (York, ME) is a terrible destination. Don't go there. 3. Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is worth the trip. I've never seen so many whales! It was the highlight of my season. 4....

Condition, Condition, Condition

Brian, There are several reasons for prices being all over the map. When it comes to boats, condition is everything. The expensive Catalina you mentioned may be in perfect condition, with new sails and well equipped with the latest electronics. It could also mean the current owner has an unrealistic...

RE: Your First Boat

Hi Double B: From what information you've told us, it's hard to tell where this interest will lead you. You may decide this isn't for you, or it could go the other way, and you and your wife may decide the cruising life is for you. Consider this a first boat. If you can get it for an attractive pric...

Additional Nissan review comment

Thanks, Chase That's some great information. One additional comment on Nissan outboards is the zincs seem very small to me. I leave my Nissan 6HP in the water all the time. I'm on a mooring with no shore power. The zinc on my boat still has a lot of life left in it. Everything's properly grounded an...

So many boats, so little time

Bly,
I couldn't help but notice this makes three Alberg-designed boats in your inventory. Now there's a gal after my own heart. I mean, after all, doesn't everyone have one boat for every room in their house?

Not factory installed

Hi Scott, FYI - This vent must have been installed by a previous owner because it is not original to the boat. I'm curious if you've ever experienced seawater intrusion into the vent. It's in a location that can get a lot of spray and, under the right (or wrong) conditions, could actually be submerg...

Truck Tire On A CD25?

Now wait a minute! Where on earth would you stow an old truck tire on a CD25? There ain't no way you're gettin' an ol' truck tire through the companionway. That would look really great mounted on my stern rail. :D That, and lots of laundry hanging from the life lines.

To Lee

Lee,

Sounds like you got yourself a bit of a lemon. My Nissan 6HP has been very reliable. I'll echo the short shaft comments. Mine has a long shaft and I wish it didn't. It came with the boat.

Now that's the understatement of the day. You might want to re-phrase that one to say it might get above freezing periodically! :D

Anchor needs to be sized for the boat

The point that gets missed in a lot of these discussions is the anchor needs to be appropriately sized for the boat. Bigger is not necessarily better and can be worse. I have a CD25 which is a pretty small boat. I use a 20-lb CQR as my primary anchor and I set it as well as a 6HP outboard is capable...

Bump

This one's been out there for five days. I hate to see a post go un-answered. Can someone help Ron out, here? I'm afraid I'm not much help. I just use a hand-held GPS, charts, and my compass. Pretty low-tech, but I get along okay.
