Re: stain removal

Mike Johnson wrote:so I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed some more and there is still a stain after using various products
There's another product out there called "Zing". I'm not sure of its chemical composition, but it made short work of some nasty stains on Ariel.

It would seem to me that the needed measurement is the extrusion alone, not including the masthead assembly.

Re: slips

I got myself into a situation this summer where I had backed out and cast off all lines but could not get the bow to come around with the use of forward and reverse bursts of power. Steve, I found myself in similarly tight quarters at the end of this season and finally decided not to fight the boat...

Or try Photobucket.com

Just write it down and keep it handy for the next time you have to resize a picture. For anyone who hasn't tried Photobucket.com, you might like it. Nothing to urge here but a FREE, easy-to-use storage site that allows you to generate thumbnails and appropriately sized images without using a photo ...

Width differences

Generally it is because people have included images in their posts that are too large to fit the screen without scrolling left to right.

Insulation

Perhaps something like this might suit your needs. It's not 2" thick, but it does a great job of taming diesel racket.

Staysail and jib

In the boat's original configuration, staysail and jib wing-on-wing is a nice combination when sailing dead downwind - especially if mainsail chafe is an issue, which it often is. If you still use the staysail boom, it helps to rig a preventer. http://www.ariel-cd36.org/2003_wingnwingbig.jpg This ar...

CD36 Dodger

Melissa, My dad and I have been talking (and dreaming) about adding a dodger to Ariel. Like you, we're looking for some good ideas and design features. I don't suppose you (or anyone else, for that matter) have some pictures of your dodger that show its construction and design? If so, I'd love to se...

Filters

Ariel originally had the same setup as Mahalo - Racor R24s as primary, and the engine mounted filter as secondary. Not only is the Perkins secondary a pain to change, as Rich mentioned, but it is essentially useless behind the 2 micron Racor. Our new system consists of two 500FGs in series, the firs...

Drawstring bags

Bill, I can't find the thread either, but you're right. It was on this board that the pics of CDs (compact discs) as labels for draw-string bags was posted. It was a great idea then, and it still is. --Joe Myerson There is nothing new under the sun, so perhaps it wasn't our idea that you're referri...

cutter vs "sloop"

Richard, The slot between the inner forestay and the headstay may seem a bit tight, but if you're flying a yankee you shouldn't have any problems. It does help to let the sail slide through the slot on its own rather than dragging it through, though. If, like others, you have a genoa on roller furli...

Re: hull to deck joint?

Our '79 CD36 is thru-bolted every 10-12 inches just as Rich and Melissa describe. It would be interesting to compile data on the models and years that are and are not thru-bolted. I wonder why the variations. Yes, we know, we had the trim pieces off to rebed some stantions and the midship cleat. The...

cd36

We hove to the other day under staysail and double-reefed main in 25-30 knot winds and approx. 6 ft. seas. Worked well. Although it would probably be more effective to lash the staysail boom even farther to windward, we simply sheeted the staysail traveler to windward and drew her in tight. Ariel sa...
