Salty Dog II Gets a Makeover

A good friend of mine is in the process of joining us Cape Dory owners. This whole process of helping him decide on buying a CD 28 has prompted me to think about my Dory and post these pictures of my 1981 Typhoon Weekender that I gave a makeover this year. I've owned her for 32 years. SaltyDogIIMode...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) DV, I have sorted through your post and it looks like your windward performance is about the same as what I got, maybe a little better (100 vs 105 degrees with the working jib vs 105% and 120 vs 130 degrees with the 140% vs 155%). As I said in my previous posts I am resigned to where I am as good...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) grluecke, If I understand your post, you were getting anywhere from 65 to 55 degrees off the wind (I'm assuming on a beat). I have a few comments that might be of interest to you. First, 55 degrees is pretty close to 52 that I was able to observe thus far (on this thread anyway) the best reported...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) RLW, OK I see this thread just won't die. But I guess that's a good thing. I don't remember writing the quote you attributed to me but I admit I am old and forgetful. I do agree that pinching up too high slows the boat but I believe the discussion to this point has been about pointing as high as ...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) All, I made a couple of slight misstatements in my last post. First the amount of helm was, perhaps overstated. Five to ten degrees was a guess (as I couldn't actually measure it) it was very small. I'm sure you guys know that in the stated wind conditions it is not unusual, even desired, to have...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:? All, this thread seems to have taken on a life of its own. For the benefit of sharing with others I thought it would be good to post the results of another trial. This time I went out with two other sailor friends so that I could look around. Wind conditions where somewhat higher than in previous...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:D All, I did another trail today in reasonably the same conditions as my first trial (see my first post). The differences today being that I single handed so it was harder to watch the GPS and instead of using my 155% I used my 105%. As predicted the TY pointed higher with the smaller jib. Instead ...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) Oswego John thanks for your reply. OK I'm getting posts faster than I can digest them, but your question about mast hook struck my fancy. My TY is also a weekender. The hook (bend) I am talking about is induced by the interplay of the fractional fore stay with the mast head back stay. I have a ha...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) Klem, again thanks for your reply. I believe I agree with all you said with respect to leeway and heel. Though I think all fin keel designs are not equal and that the TY full length keel design is better than many older fin keel designs in mitigating leeway (racing and modern boat design being th...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) Jim1945 thank you for your response. As I mentioned in a previous post, I also love how my TY sails. (I have sailed a considerable amount on a Highlander and Hobie 16.) I am only considering the windward performance (not frustrated) because I recently refitted my TY and want to get the best from ...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) Stan W thank you for your response. As I stated in a previous post the tell tales on the luff are flying well. However, have to admit that I am just getting around to paying more attention to my jib sail camber. It is harder to see than the main but I will look into you halyard suggestion as I do...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) Jim Trandel thanks for the reply. As I stated in my post above I need to try my 105%. However, no one seems to have any suggestions about correct fore stay tension. I have looked in the TY book and am going through my books on sailing. They have some info but I still have questions. Also, no one ...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) Klem thanks for the reply. I would call myself an advanced intermediate sailor. I have been sailing since 1985 (except my 8 year break). Early on I sailed a Highlander and did some crewing in races with them. I did a lot of reading in my time. I assume you are a Cape Dory owner (as you are visiti...

Re: Typhoon Angle of point on a beat

:) Thanks for your reply Skeep. The others you talk about have not yet posted responses to my inquiry. I have known for 25 years that my TY (Salty Dog II, #1792) didn't point very well, but I too like her classic design, single hand ability, and ruggedness. This year, being that I just refitted her ...

Re: I Need to replace cockpit locker door hinges

:D I finally was able to replace the hinges with some stainless hinges (which will be much more durable than the originals). I believe that newer Typhoons with the two surface doors (a horizontal surface and a vertical surface) have flat hinges as original equipment. Refer to the post from Steve Lau...
