Re: 1974 Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender

Many thanks to the CDSOA for being a fantastic resource !
Moved on to something a bit bigger but I am still fond of Cape Dories and the Alberg design.

Re: CD 22
I've thought about an Ensign, Ty Daysailor and Ty Cuddy, but none have self bailing cockpits ( I know, seems like a minor issue) and not many Ty Daysailors or Cuddy models around.

Re: CD 22
Would like to be able to daysail with 4 people comfortably, my Ty is too cramped for four. A 27 (or 25) is too much boat for what I need.

Re: typhoon rub toe rail profiles
See attached for the rub rail profile. Max height and widths are 3/4 X 3/4 inches, at least on my old Ty. I cracked my rub rail in a couple of spots on our Association dock a couple of summers ago during a battle with lumpy seas and used the old rail as a template. I didn't replace the whole rail, b...

Re: Split Teak Coaming
i had a similar problem with the coamings on my Typhoon, due to its age and likely multiple teak sandings over the years. I solved the problem by drilling thin holes perpendicular to the cracks, partially filling the holes with West System epoxy, placing narrow screws into the holes and topping with...

Re: Fisher of Fish ??s
Last year I tried bottomfishing from my Ty in Buzzard's Bay and caught a bunch of black bass and a decent-sized flounder. This year I decided to try trolling with either my 4 hp outboard or while sailing. The fishing while sailing attempts went ok and I caught a couple of black bass but I wound it c...

Re: Painting Exterior Teak
I have a friend who's building a wooden Friendship Sloop (actually he's rebuilding the boat using the old rotted timbers as a template). He recently told me that he was painting instead of varnishing his bright work. When I questioned this, he explained that most old wooden boats were painted.

Re: Typhoon outboard motor opinions and thoughts
My boat came with a Yamaha F4 4 hp 4 stroke and it's been more than adequate for Buzzards Bay currents and tides. Pretty light and reliable too except when I forget to turn on the gas or pinch the gas line from the tank.

Re: Smaller CDs Rudder issues.
Sleep, nice job of removing layers of bottom paint. I'm contemplating this as a next year project. Two questions though: how did you remove the bottom paint; since it looks like you still have vestiges of the old bottom paint left, will you remove down to the gel coat before you barrier coat? Thx. P...

Re: Typhoon battery placement
The battery on my Ty Weekender is located under the starboard locker/seat with wires running to the cabin. My guess is that one of the previous owners placed it there to balance the outboard weight on the port side. I like the idea of no battery and AAA powered LEDs but my battery powers an automati...

Re: Keel Blister
Thx everyone for their thoughts and suggestions, very much appreciate the help. Today I began to prep my Ty for the winter and took a moment to drill a couple of small holes in my keel blister. Surprisingly not a drop of water was to be found. I do plan to grind out the spot and will plan to repair ...
