Would like to be able to daysail with 4 people comfortably, my Ty is too cramped for four. A 27 (or 25) is too much boat for what I need.

Four (4) POBs on a Cape Dory 25D is not necessarily all that comfortable - especially if all 4 are in the cockpit. I do not think 4 POBs on a CD 22 would be particularly comfortable either.

We cannot daysail comfortably in our 27. If you want to get four people in the cockpit I think you are going to have to step up even further. May something with a wheel, but not with a tiller.

Have you considered a Pearson Ensign. While it is not a Cape Dory, it is a very nice day sailor. It has a large cockpit and will easily accommodate four people. They are relatively abundant and can be acquired for a modest sum.

I day sail often with 4 adults in my 22. We always have a wonderful time. Different strokes for different folks.

Here is a picture of five adults on board, four are in the cockpit, the tiller is hitting the two girls toward the front in their knees. We are not sailing just motoring on the first ride in our "new" boat.
Sure we had fun, but trying to sail would have been difficult. You cannot se the stern in this photo, but notice the bow, it is about three inches above the water line. All of the weight was in the back and the exhaust outlet was half in the water on a flat "sea".

If you are looking to daysail with 4+ I think that you should include the Daysailer and Open versions of the Typhoon - both have really large cockpits.

I've thought about an Ensign, Ty Daysailor and Ty Cuddy, but none have self bailing cockpits ( I know, seems like a minor issue) and not many Ty Daysailors or Cuddy models around.

I once had a 22 and it was great for 1 or 2 (maybe 3 if two were kids). I think that 4 would be tough, unless they were really good friends

Lack of a self bailing cockpit is a non-issue. I sail in an area with short steep chop and have never taken a wave over the side, some spray yes, but never a wave. Once I replaced my boom tent i have never had a problem with rainwater - maybe a couple of gallons in the sump after a really hard rain. Both the less common Tys also have foam flotation - I dont know about the Ensign.

Finally there were 176 22s made vs. 141 of the less common Tys. In either case you are going to have to look, but there are a half dozen of each available each year.

In addition to the ensign you should also think about the CCSB Goldeneye.

We must be doing it wrong we had a 29 footer. Hardly had people out on it, sat at the dock mostly. Now we have a Typhoon and sail it 2-3 times per week. We are a family of 3 but pretty regularly have friends over. The most we had at a time was 4 adults and 2 kids. That was a little tight but it was for sure fun.

I keep a full cockpit cover on my Ensign and an electric bilge pump--so I dont notice that the cockpit is not self-bailing.
