Short Cover

Maine Sail.
Your cover job lets water/snow melt onto the deck which refreezes. Doesn't this do damage to your varnished teak.?

Slave replies

So what else is new.I feel that owning a boat is voluntary servitude anyway. I would like to get rid of those unsightly marks made by the shrinkwrap edge. The marks are not scratches into the paint (I have many of those also), on a car I would buff them out. Ive always used only Alcare but after 7 y...

Aging Bottom Paint

After ten years my bottom is starting to look like the asphalt streets of New England in the spring ( ie full of pot holes). Being lazy I really don't want to sand the entire bottom or use other methods of removing the whole thing.. Most of it is still quite good but the blotches of peeled bottom pa...

Waving

I find that most sailors wave. Lobsterman wave when they can. They are working after all and need their hands, so I excuse them if they don't wave back. I don't wave to boaters of any sort who cross directly in front of my bow at 20 knots. I occasionally wish sailboats came with steering wheel horns...

Annoying asymetrical bowsprit nook

Sometimes we overlook the obvious. I too have been annoyed with the lack of symmetry between the port/starboard nook between toe rail and bowsprit and the difficulty of varnishing /sanding that area. It never dawned in me to cut / insert a piece of teak to fill in the area and solve that chore every...

where to store chain

Diapensia, Prior to getting the 275' of chain you may have paid little attention to the bottom of you chain locker (probably a piece of wood fiberglassed in). There may be lots of space below that false bottom that you may be able to use for chain storage. I have nothing forward of about the middle ...

Re: Solar sailing

[quote="Neil Gordon"]Len,

These sails sound like they're only good for a downwind run. How do we get back?[/quote

Neil,
The universe bends.Keep sailing long enough you will come back to where you started. No need to come about!!

sailing to the stars

My three questions were very ambiquos- "see"--how ,when etc. While searching for a good answer I ran across an article on SOLAR SAILS that may get our "ships" into deep space. Curiously, the sails are made of a new carbon based mateial (see below). Maybe this technonlogy can be a...

Neil,
watch this comparison as an animation.

Ponder the big three question- What is the brightest star we can see?. What is the biggest star.? What is the closest star?

off the wind

If you sail in light air "most" of the time, work everything from the mast, and stay on the same course for "long" periods, invest in a cruising spinnaker (ie an asymmetrical with a built on "Sock".) Once the tack is attached it can be raised easily without a winch, and...

Seacocks and hoses

a new slip occupant recently arrived (a 36 foot sailboat) and was shrink wrapped in clear. Spoke to him briefly. He will be living aboard all winter. There are several trawlers with live aboards but he is the only sail here. We discussed his heating system but have not as yet gotten down to some of ...

Re: Winter in the water

Neil,
The boat would not suffer the fate of pilings due to freezing from falling/rising tide, since the boat floats.

Freezing in the seacocks and hoses! - How can that be prevented?

Winter in the water

I have always dutifully covered my boats (tarps).and stored them on the hard. For the last decade(?) they have been shrink wrapped. Lately I have watched the progress of about a dozen boats spent at their slip during winter in various stages of covering. The trawlers seem to suffer no visible damage...
