Re: CD 31 Arrival

Congrats, Guy! Maybe it's time for another Lake Michigan rendezvous. What do you say, Jerry? ;)
I wouldn't say no. But it would depend on when and where. My part time consulting job keeps thinking it's full time this year.

Re: SS Is Stainless, Not Rustless

Okay John, that is impressive. Now the question is will it stay that way for a longer time this go round?

Re: 1977 CD 28 pre purchase questions

Are you referring to the red and green bow light or the steaming (or masthead light)? You mentioned that you had found the running lights. They can either be on the cabin sides or on the bow pulpit. But if you found those then you may be looking for the white light that is shown forward when under p...

Re: SS Is Stainless, Not Rustless

This is a major reason why I stay on the Great Lakes! I hate rust on a boat.

Re: Grounding Plate

My CD28 was struck by lightning prior to my time with her. The previous owner reported the electronics took a hit but there was no structural damage to the boat. I saw a CD30 after one of our LMCDOA Rondi's that had been struck. She was on the hard and it looked like someone had taken a pistol insid...

Sail Care

A while back I sent the mainsail for my CD28 in to Sail Care for cleaning. They sent back a quote of $544.09 for cleaning and repairs. The only thing that seemed a little high was sewing on the logo, numbers and draft stripe (so they wouldn't come off during the cleaning process). That was 96.00 of ...

Re: Where is the Far Reach?

John, Along with many others I've followed this project for years. What great news! The boat did what she was designed to do and the no leaks, no major problems is a fine testament to all the years of work you have poured into making the Far Reach your own. And when the wind went away you didn't fir...

Re: The Troubles Of Complicated Systems

It would seem to me that there is a case for recovery against the surveyor. It's a sad fact of life that many of those involved are only legally responsible to themselves, but the surveyor should be bound to serve the interest of the buyer. I'm not sure I would make a purchase as large as this witho...

Re: CD28 Sailing Characteristics?

David,

My prior boat was a 25 not a 25D. As to pumping (or sculling) the tiller, it can help a bit, but I generally find that she will carry herself through a tack in light air as long as it is done smartly.

Re: CD28 Sailing Characteristics?

David, I've had my CD28 since 1998. One of the reasons I made the move is to get the speed carrying ability the added weight provided over my CD25. Lake Michigan is prone to closely spaced waves and my 25 would have her speed knocked down hard when heading into them. On a lake crossing once I watche...

Re: Boatyard Suggestions

I haven't had my boat worked on there. But I have been following his work on the internet (he posts daily photo logs of his progress) for years and I've had the opportunity to ask questions of him on my own projects. His website is like a graduate level course in boat restoration. Take a look at the...

Re: Boatyard Suggestions

It's way off your course, but I would want my boat worked on by Tim Lackey at Lackey Sailing in Maine. But spring comes a bit later there.

Re: CD 27 Parital Deck Recore

I'd contact Tim Lackey and ask him if he thought the price was reasonable. He's very good about sharing knowledge even with folks far outside his area.

Re: Water in Rudder

Common problem.

I'd ignore it and go sailing. Make a plan to repair it when you won't be looking over your shoulder at everyone else out on the water having fun. :D
