Cape Dory 28 for sale, Deale MD
I have finally decided that I will not be able to undertake refurbishing Emerald anytime soon and will sell her instead. She is Hull 200, from 1976 I believe. I have a survey that was done when I bought her late last year that you're welcome to see. Pictures are available at my Picasa album here: ht...

Success!
:D :D Well I headed back out to the boat today armed with a second new bilge pump, a second battery charger, and a dulled chisel. Thanks to the great pictures and advice I got here, I was able to tighten that stuffing box up and stop the leak. It took a couple of rounds of PB Blaster, and quite a bi...

<SNIP> The bronze fitting is the stern tube. There is no fiberglass tube. The fitting goes through the hull and is secured with two bolts. The top bolt is shown in the photo you linked. Don't worry about hammering; because everything is bronze, the nuts turn pretty easily. Yes, the wires are part o...

Thank you for<SNIP> 1. Assuming you still have the original equipment, your boat doesn't have the usual stern tube/hose/stuffing box arrangement. There's not enough room. You have a single bronze fitting which combines the stern tube and the stuffing box. There is no hose. 2. If you have a below th...

Thank you for the pictures and the link. It's not at all what I thought it was--I didn't realize the flax was inside the end nut. I have the hex nut style, which I still don't quite see how there's room to fit any wrench in there, especially on the lock nut. The slotted version as in Zeida's picture...

The good with the bad...
Today I made it out to Emerald and was able reassemble the thermostat housing. One bolt hole was apparently stripped, but it appears to be holding. Although that may only be because there's no water flowing through the system. I was amazed that the motor actually started up. Really only because I vi...

Murphy's Law says: Of course it's a Speedseal
What others have said except if you have a Speedseal cover, they use a very thin O-ring. Oy vey! Guess what, it is a Speedseal. And there were a couple of new o-rings in the box that looked about the right size and had me wondering. No big deal, it's a Speedseal right? Piece of cake to replace next...

What's the impeller housing gasket material?
Hi all. I've given up on this marina as far as getting this engine running, so I came over to tackle putting it back together myself. What I've run into is that I thought I had a new housing gasket aboard, but just realized it's a paper material. Is that the right stuff? If not, I did bring some gas...

Re: Old Posts on CD-28 #200
If you have not already found them, there are several posts in the archive regarding this boat. If you just put "Crisfield" in the Search box, you will see some posts by Craig Scott detailing some of his experiences with Emerald. Good luck with you boat. Good idea, and no I hadn't thought...

Thanks for the good wishes!
Dixon, thanks for your number, I'll definitely try to call you this week, I'd love to hear about your experience. Malcolm (who's Michael?), I also emailed the guy to ask about the jib boom and got the same response. Interestingly, today I was going through all the sail bags I'd taken off the ...

Long introduction, with apologies!
Below is the response I wrote to a fellow on Sailnet, who was asking if it would be a good idea to bid on the Cape Dory 28 that was on eBay recently. I bought that boat, and I'd planned to introduce myself here at some point, but I guess this is as good an introduction as any. I look forward to any ...
