Maritimes in 2010 Update

So far we think both Evergreen and Kerry Deare will be trying for Newfoundland this season. I have not heard back from other yachts on this board so far. Typically we depart for Nova Scotia in early July and just push on in the general direction of our destination (NF South Coast). With luck we may ...

Re: Updates more important in some areas

... A downside is the cost of chart upgrades, no free upgrades here. So that is my excuse for not having up to date charts ... Your point is well taken: if one usually operates in the same or in quite familiar waters, that may affect an individual's choice on updates for expensive proprietary chart...

Electronic Chart Updates

Every season we spend a lot of time updating and maintaining gear and equipment, and this should also apply to the electronic charts most of us now use. If you use a laptop-based system with any of the popular software suites you can take advantage of the US government's convenient chart downloads. ...

"Sailing Off Into The Sunset" CAUTIONARY WARNINGS

... Just curious how fellow sailors would respond ... dosn't it sound like it would be nice to cash in and sail away into the sunset ... This is a complicated subject these days even for people with tons of money. One of the first things to consider is where you live. For example if you live anywhe...

Tooth Fairy A Hoax

Well, friends, it's time to own up. No, there really are no tooth fairies, and unfortunately there really are no Harley Davidson outboard motors (Google is your friend). There are however Harley Davidson decals, and these are what I used on my new Tohatsu 3.5 HP 4 stroke outboard to replace the orig...

A Species That Deserves To Be Extinct

... Those British Seagulls where wonderful in every way ... Back in the days when the winds were stronger, the seas were calm and the beer and ice cream were always colder ... I always thought of the British Seagull as a perfect example of the type of thinking that led to the loss of the British Em...

Re: Cruising in a Typhoon Weekender?

... friends in Maine ... suggested that I sail the boat up there ... just wanted to check here on the board to see if this sounds doable ... I'd say the question is not "Can one take a Typhoon from the Bay to Maine?" but rather "Is the particular Typhoon in question ready to make the...

Some Tether Ideas

My jacklines run between padeyes I installed specifcly for the purpose. On the forward end I put in a padyeye right behind the bowsprit, on the aft end I installed padeyes right by the cockpit coamings ... Russell pretty well described our setup, but a few years ago we stole an idea to modify the t...

Re: I'm hoping these will work for me

I installed ... this little baby for the new coax I ran up the mast: http://content.westmarine.com/images/catalog/large/540740.jpg Very clean and easy installation. I use these also, Warren, and they have worked well since year 2000. They are certainly watertight, nice looking, and easy to use when...
