Re: Hurth tranny, 4 years old, kaput

Have used ATF for 7 years, and never had a problem - even with extensive motoring times. If the lubricant is badly discolored, it may indicate that the clutches are either worn or not engaging properly due to cable misadjustment.

Re: Typhoon battery

On an amp hour per dollar basis, my best success has been (and I hate to admit it) a Walmart marine dual purpose battery. After 4 years of service it doesn't have quite enough cranking amps to start my diesel, but now its my house bank backup still working well for that.

Re: Electrical Question - engine start

Don't know how the old Yanmar wiring is arranged, but on the larger Cape Dories with Universal engines the various connections and fuse holders between the engine panel and solenoid are notorious for developing corrosion over 30 years. A few additional ohms of resistance at each connection, combined...

Looks identical to the sheet attachment cable on 1960's vintage Alcort Sunfish hulls.

Re: First Sail for the Far Reach

All I can say is wow! I will be the first to admit that having followed your remanufacturing efforts over the past years, I was at best skeptical, and tended to think at times what you were doing was sheer heresy. However, your results speak for themselves. You have a 21st century evolution of the b...

Re: Cracked Mixing Elbow

Jim: The problem is that the OEM mixing elbow for the M25 is fabricated from Schedule 40 carbon steel pipe. In salt water service its life is limited. Simply put, it rusts and eventually cracks. There are two options - accept this (as I did last season) and expect to replace it again 10 years from n...

Re: Maine Sail's Compass Articles On Seacocks

Tape-type thread sealant (Teflon tape) is problematic in industrial piping applications and flat-out prohibited in most aerospace and other critical applications because it has a tendency to migrate and get into valves, causing bypass leakage and blockages. I love the stuff for home plumbing, but st...

Re: Source for Mainsail Covers?

I can vouch for Shipshape, being very pleased with my winter cover. Another possible source is Thurston Sails in Warren RI. My sail covers all come from Thurston, and I know they have patterns for various CD models, and do high quality work.

Re: Painting waterline with hard bottom paint?

Clear enough useless clutter out of your lockers so the boot stripe is clear of the water! Sarcastic sounding, I know. But it really works, believe me. Amazing how much gets tucked away!

Re: heat exchanger - M-25-5421 Question

Use the existing bracket. You can bend it a bit to a larger radius, although I didn't bother. You will need two larger hose clamps to fit around the 3 inch diameter hx.

Re: Did I fry the alternator?

I used a local automotive electric shop. They replaced bearings, brushes, diodes, regulator and tested the alternator for less than $100 and 2 days.

Re: Did I fry the alternator?

This is exactly what I did after I fried my diodes - routed the output straight to the battery bank nd bypassing the switches. Saves a LOT of headaches.

Re: Did I fry the alternator?

Been there, done that. Only takes that one absent minded turn of the key or inadvertent battery switch to OFF and the alternator diodes are toast. On the plus side, its a quick fix.

Re: heat exchanger end caps, M-25-5421

Best upgrade I did was to replace the woefully undersized 2 inch HX with the recommended 3 inch. Amazing reduction in operating coolant temperature.
