A Final Post

This will be my last post on this message board after having sold our CD31. We enjoyed the boat immensely. Our daughter grew up on and sailed safely aboard her for many years. We really appreciated the expertise and camaraderie of the Cape Dory community both on the water and on this web board. A gl...

Stuck @ Home Reading List - This is completely informal and I have a couple of these going at once. Just finished two William Gibson novels, " The Peripheral ", and the second, " Agency ". Be sure to read them in this sequence and be prepared for scenarios that include global hum...

Re: 20 months under shrink wrap

This is a reply to the points made about covid-19 restrictions in Maryland on marine industry, recreational boating. First, confirmation, recreational boating is currently prohibited in Maryland waters, however, maritime industries including boatyards and maintenance facilities are designated as ess...

Re: 20 months under shrink wrap

I'm commenting here on the original info request about shrink wrap for 20+ months. My CD31 was on the hard for just under 2 years while I was on international assignment. When I sought guidance about storage I was told unequivocally, don't even think about outside storage especially shrink wrap. The...

Re: Will We Be Sailing or Not This Season?

Maryland has a full recreational boating ban in effect accept for those harvesting seafood for sustenance. So always be brandishing a crab net. Maryland has designated marine operations as essential so boatyards are staying open at their discretion. We've been aboard our CD31 in her slip several tim...

Re: Repowering a CD31

We re-powered Surprise with a Universal Westerbeke M25xpb I believe was the current model designation in 2005. Relatively simple swap out done by Vosbury Marine. No regrets, a great engine that's given good service. I can't believe its now been 14 years......

Successful Day Passage

This post has no practical utility.......Just to share some joy! I recently did a very fast motorsailing passage from Annapolis to Georgetown on the Sassafras River, Chesapeake Bay. A call from home requiring our immediate presence cut our week cruise short. We had to head straight home, a forecast ...

Re: Tropical System over Northern Georigia

I want to pass along a good source of weather info for Florida, in fact South East Coast and northward too. Check out Mike's Weather Page on Facebook. It's sometimes silly (his reporting from the flooded infield of Daytona International Speedway last weekend was priceless for instance) but he is kee...

Re: Portal and hatch gaskets source?

Thanks Ethan - you are probably right about the Bomars. I did use the 1/2" on the forward Bomar and have found it to work. I note though that I've learned NOT to dog it down to full hand strength, which is considerable in my gnarly case.

MccMaster Carr

Ultra-Weather-Resistant EPDM Foam Cords 1/2" - stock number 8605k44

You will have enough to last a lifetime - 100 ft lengths. We have used it for Spartan ports and Bomar hatches.

Re: Groco Head Repair/Replace

I've maintained an HF for 20 years or so doing mostly the non-comprehensive repair kit regimen every few years. This spring I earned many dad-type repair project points when I rebuilt the entire pump with a new pump cylinder and internals etc. I'd also note that the bronze valve lever sheared off in...

Re: Sta-Bil diesel fuel stabilizer

I have never used it. However do use Bio-Bar JF every time I fill the tank for many years. For small tank diesel installations, the organic bloom of biota is the issue as the fuel sits, diesel's pretty stable otherwise doesn't turn to varnish like gasoline. Like you, I generally don't fill the tank ...

Walter Hobbs

The screw heads were straight! Just an optical illusion caused by camera angle, declination of the sun, azimuth of the spheres, Bernoulli effect, strength of the Mt Gay and tonic, etc.....

Thanks

Cheers!
