Re: clamshell vents on cd 28 stern

if you want to save money, I find those clamshell vents often get knocked into the deep blue, I have had great luck using a 3 inch pvc right angle elbow, functionally identical, tho not as nautical looking

Re: Request for advice on installing & using boarding step

http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1|7504|2290202|2290206&id=88159 This WIchard emergency boarding ladder worked well enough for me to use from the side of my CD 27. Yes its true, I acutally was able to climb aboard using this ladder and I am one overweight out of shape not very athletic...

Re: Moving from sloop to cutter

I am now sailing an Allied Princess 36 rigged as a cutter (no mizzen). When the wind is over about 16 I like to put the second reef in my main, full staysail, and full yankee, then if things pick up I start with furling the yankee. It balances very nicely that way and the boat moves. Of course, I ha...

Re: Raymarine i40 help - A hard (aground) lesson learned

Don't get to excersized about the depth sounder. In my experience, and I sail in a lot of skinny water, the depth sounder will tell you, in the best of circumstances, that you are about the run aground about ten seconds after you do. Thats just the nature of shoals. They come up suddenly and are usu...

Re: CD 27 and Raymarine Autohelm

I had a 2000 on my 27. I never thought it was overpowered and often wished it was a bit stronger. I mostly sailed out of Jones Inlet on Long Island and in the ocean. I would definitely favor the 2000 over the 1000. Only reason to go with the 1000 would be if you sail in very protected waters with no...

Re: Tackling the Cutlass Bearing

I've never had a dripless shaft seal. I understand the advantages but would like to know from those who have them...what do you do if there is a failure? With conventional packing the slow drip gets worse and worse, but you can always (up to a point) tighten up the nuts and get back to port. If a PS...

Re: Tap set for installing cleats on mast

why buy a set? you will most likely use #10 and 1/4 inch for that sort of thing. if you are referring to a set of taper, plug, and bottom taps you will not need a starter tap in an aluminum mast, plug or taper will do fine, plug being generally more useful. its nice to have the proper sized drills f...

Re: DRAGGING THROTTLE

if it is the problem I had, it is at the base of the throttle, where it pivots, should be easy to get to and find, if that is what the problem is.

Re: DRAGGING THROTTLE

This has happened on my boat. The fix was a small screw at the base of the throttle that needed to be tightened. It gives pressure against the throttle arm on the pedestal and keeps vibrations from causing the throttle to move.
Hope its a simple fix like this.

Re: New Sailing Movie

a great movie that takes place almost entirely on a sailboat is Polanksy's KNIFE IN THE WATER. Its not really about sailing (or is it?) but its a cool little boat...and speaking about movies that take place almost entirely on a boat dont forget Hitchcock's LIFEBOAT.

Re: a shocking battery question

Hi Jeff, Thank you for your very understandable reply. I have a feeling my alternator is not up to the job, and my shore power is only 20amp plugged in from an outlet outside the house. I really do not do much cruising, mostly six or seven hour day sails with a few one or two night overnights. It se...
