C & D canal dangers are very real
A few years ago we were headed up the bay from Cape May, on our way to the Bahamas. We'd spent a restful night at anchor in Cape May and were eager to get to Annapolis and meet friends. Leaving just before dawn we transited the canal and made our way into the bay. As we neared the shipping channels ...

Ginger beer
Funny OJ,
I just popped in to check my email and have a GB and a dab of Capt. Morgan's Private Stock .
Yes forecasting is a really bone art. Only finely altered bones can really do justice to true forecasting.

Another PT / sailing experience
I echo the PT point. Last Nov. I double fractured my ankle, requiring almost 7 weeks of bed rest and another 8 weeks of casts, crutches, cam walkers and canes, then in late Feb. I had to have left shoulder surgery. I'm still doing PT for both injuries. Physical Therapy has been a lifeline to getting...

bump in the night
In my experience, ships can come out of nowhere even when your looking for them.. Case in point: Back in '03 we were outbound to Newfoundland, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. A late afternoon, misinterperted French language, weather forecast caused us to carry on into very squally night. Durning one pa...

paint it
After my first long voyage on LaVida, I did away with the boot stripe. Anti-fouling all the way up kept the stripe line and kept my waterline cleaner. The key to a cleaner waterline for me is to throw half of my spares overboard and limit crew to one bag of stuff. However that will never work and we...

Grinding a winch - an affordable solution
As I've age, I've found my winch grinding duties were pretty well filled by our CD33, LaVida. I could handle all the grinding and not feel run over. However with the purchase of our 44DS, the winching duties have more than tripled and the resulting effort really takes the wind out of one's sundowner...

gear
Rod, Given you already have one of the best boats I know of the next best safety gear, for me, is a good weather window, fair tide, no time table and last but not least good capable crew. We also file a boat plan with friends when we go offshore. As a rule, we try and sail round the clock on long pa...

retiring time
Dick, As you noticed many years ago, I stopped wearing a watch. The only clock I watch is in the sky. sun for day, moon or star for night. Anchor up with sun, anchor down with moon. Very simple time keeping for a simple retired guy. wonder why then everyone is always upset with my arrival, something...

Seeking history of the open cockpit Typhoon's
I have been reading all the issues of the "Typhooner" written by the now departed, Noel Peattie. In article #10 its written: "Robert H. Conway writes from Martha's Vineyard: "Here in Quitsa Pond at Martha's Vineyard is perhaps one of the oldest Typhoons. It wasn't made by Cape Do...

Cabin topped
Ken,
I'd also like something completely new.
Fortunately you've got it a lot easier with the cutter layout, than I.
LaVida is a sloop and the traveler is in the cockpit.
Taking the old unit out isn't the problem, putting something back in is.

Found good source for 1/2" rt angle Milwaukee V28
This is the cordless V28 unit used as an "electric winch handle" along with the "Winchbit" (44.00 seperate cost) that sells or over a $1000.00 Many friends have this onboard their boat and find it very handy when old shoulders can't grind big manual winches. If your interested, l...

replacement
Ken, I pondered the same problem and found that the OEM does not mfg the part anymore. The only thing I could come up with was to piggy back another traveler on top of the old one. Something I don't want to do. Getting at the fasteners is the main problem, perhaps there is a way around the problem. ...

Now, as Paul Harvey would say, here's the rest of the story................ As you know, I was in Erie, PA, doing work on EOS our 44 Hunter DS. OJ this is your ball ole friend ;-)
As a point of honor, I make it a point to never discuss transactions after they are completed.
However I will say that IMHO, I believe the owner wanted her to go to someone who is a diehard CDer and would take care of her. I think his price reflected his prudent decision.
