Re: bronze rub-strake over rubrail?
John, I'm getting the expired domain message too, though I went on your site just a few days ago and it was fine. The page I am reaching is for Network Solutions and states: "farreachvoyages.com expired on 04/15/2016 and is pending renewal or deletion" Considering the 2016 expiration date ...

Re: Wanted: CD 330, 33 or 30 MKII. Must have T-shaped cockpi
Here's a nice 33 that just went up for sale in Oriental NC. No, it doesn't have a t-shaped cockpit, but it looks to have plenty of room around the wheel to clear the knees sliding along the locker to behind the wheel:

Re: CA sailboat slams pier
Horrifying. I almost wish I hadn't seen that. My guess is that the main halyard or gooseneck broke, or the track ripped out of the mast, bringing down the main. The crew desperately tried to set the roller furling jib to get some control of the boat, but obviously were not able to claw off a lee sho...

Re: CD 25 for Sale in North Carolina
My CD25 is sold. I sailed her to Lower Broad Creek today and delivered her to her new owner, Cape Dory Board member Scott Pickard. I am delighted that Scott has the boat because I know she is in good hands, will be taken care of and sailed.

Re: CD 25 for Sale in North Carolina
Valor is still for sale. May 2016 I had her hauled and repainted the bottom. Earlier this month I took her on a 400 mile round trip from her home marina on the Neuse River, up through Belhaven to the Albemarle Sound, Elizabeth City and Manteo, then home. She sails great, especially with the clean bo...

Re: Oriental, NC; bridges
My boat is in a marina just across the river from Oriental, and I have sailed under that bridge many times aboard my CD25. Yes, it is a nominal 45 footer, and only in extreme flood conditions would it clear less than 40 feet, so you are safe in your 25D. We don't have solar tides on the Neuse River,...

Re: Boat names
A boat's name is a completely personal and individual preference. Personally, I don't care for cutesy puns, bragging names or overly long names. Some names are so common that there seem to be half a dozen on them in every marina - no offense if you sail "Dream Catcher," but which "Dre...

Re: Where is the Far Reach?
My guess - straight down the coast on a nice gentle northerly. Since you are starting south of Cape Hatteras, the Gulfstream is far enough offshore to let you slip along to its west, close alongshore, and maybe even catch some south-setting eddies in Onslow Bay and points south. A good shakedown cru...

Re: CD 25 Wish List of Improvements
I put my ladder amidships so that I can grab onto the shrouds for balance coming aboard. It's a little trouble with the jib sheet, but not much. I rigged up a jib downhaul, which is just a light line that passes through a block at the bow and runs up the forestay with the jib. It has a loop at the e...

Re: The Troubles Of Complicated Systems
I'd also say follow the link posted by Maine Sail in his comment above, "Maine Sails How-To Articles" and carefully read through them all. They gave me a basic understanding of several boat systems, and I know what to look for as I search for a "new" boat. Plus, the articles are ...

Re: The Troubles Of Complicated Systems
Well, actually it was an old 70's vintage Tartan so I wouldn't blame the investor-owned corporation or the accountants for this one. I've known some Tartans and they are not overly complex or poorly constructed. If you read the account carefully, I think you will find that it was a case of an inexpe...

Re: Aging Boat Questions
This subject is well worth discussing, considering that many of our boats have reached or passed the 40 year mark. I think a lot depends on what you plan to do with the boat. Is it a fair weather day sailor, or a blue water boat, or something in between? For a day sailor, I think periodic visual ins...
