Original owners

I purchased "Frolic", my Cape Dory 27 #96 new in 1978 while working at Cape Dory. Although 33 years of owning the same boat has worked for me, I do not recommend it. As a yacht broker, I suggest that everyone should change boats every 5 years!

Cape Dory ports

There were a few changes in the number of ports a Cape Dory model might have. The first C-27 had 4 ports, but it was determined that the look was too busy. All others had 3. The first 6 or 7 C-30's had 5 ports, and all of these were ketches as the cutter had yet to be introduced. The 36 was first sh...

Hi Walt and Kelle,
The width of the stove cutout on your boat is 22", and the minimum width required for a Force 10 Propane stove is 21"

Troy, the flush thru-hulls are used when a hull is specifically molded with flush thru-hulls in mind. Thus the laminate is built up on the inside in the area. If you decide to use them you should do the same. The small amount of drag of the regular thru-hulls is probably not worth the effort. (Besid...

Cored hulls

The Cape Dory 30,33 and 36 powerboats were all cored with Balsa-core above the chine, or basically above the waterline. These are high speed vessels and keeping them as light as possible was important. Powerboats have large, flat topsides so rigidity was best handled by coring and not extra laminate...

The Cape Dory 33 Poweryacht was constructed with balsa core in the sides of the hull above the chine, and solid glass below.

chain plate backing hardware

With this discussion of chain plate backing material, I checked a Cape Dory 30, 1985. This boat has the aluminum backing system. So maybe all of the boats changed in the early 80's. I will continue to try to get more details on what changed and when.

Mariner's Licence

Actually, for delivery of a vessel, you really don't need one, do you?Although the credibility factor is increased. At Robinhood Marine we felt that it was wise to be licenced as, in the situation of demonstrating a boat for sea trial, new or used, we have people aboard for potential profit. A "...

TWIC

Andy, if it is of any help, the fee is only $105.50 if you hold a MML issued after Jan 13, 2006. Of course, they will only validate the TWIC for 5 years after your licence was issued, rather than 5 years from when the TWIC is issued. My brother in law has an oil transport company with 250 employees ...

Buyer beware

As a yacht broker, I can say that the advise you received on this board was terrific, and right on. The seller gave you every reason to suspect that he knew the boat would have issues at survey, likely something serious like deck de-laminations. It is one thing to end up with a slightly longer list ...

Boat broker question

Some thoughts on the above comments that may be helpful. Sea Hunt has it about right except that the deposit check should be made to the brokerage company (not the broker) as it must be held in escrow until a closing or be returned to the buyer if the boat fails survey to the buyers satisfaction. If...

Good man lost

Last month I shared with Jean Fogelberg the dialog from the message board about Dan. She was very pleased and touched by everyone's kind words, and appreciative that Leonard had started the thread. She said that he really had a passion for sailing and loved his beautiful "Minstrel"

Dan's boat

Yes, Dan Fogelberg's beloved "Minstrel" has been listed for sale. She is in beautiful condition as Dan always insisted her to be. Although his wife, Jean, has said that it would be great if she went to one of his many fans, most important to Dan was that she be sold to someone who will sai...

In the early 80's Cape Dory made an attempt to "lighten up" the interiors by using formica type of panels. In the first few 36's and 33's they were used on the back rests and the cabin and chart tables. This was more expensive to do as the teak plywood was purchased as a complete sheet and...
