Some are just furlers, some are furler/reefers
When the jib is roller-reefed, there is a lot of force trying to unroll it the rest of the way. Some furler-only units are not designed to resist that. I don't know what makes them different. My guess is the reefers are more torsionally rigid, because the unreefing forces go all the way up the luff,...

Re: Kids and sailing
Our kids were 2 and 3 when we got Lilypad, and we've brought them along from the start, when the weather is good. We've used several tricks to get their interest and keep them safe and happy. 1. Let them hold the tiller. 2. Sail to a destination. A short daysail for ice cream, or an overnight to a s...

No need for eyes in the back of your head . . .
No need for eyes in the back of your head . . .
. . . just hit the reverse switch, sit in the bow, and pull yourself along.
You've already given up on dignity and tradition by using the thing.

My Datamarine S-200DL depthsounder does not work, and I need to replace or repair it. I also would like to have fewer holes below the water line, and the wood fairing block with the old transducer is starting to show its age. The knotmeter transducer (Datamarine #A-120) is retractable, and locks int...

John V. You seem focused on the rope at 12:00 on the pulley. At that point, it has only horizontal forces in it. By the time the rope gets to the top of the pulley, it is no longer supporting the 10-lb weight. By that point, all of the downward force has already been transferred to the quarter of th...

Re: Great Pulley Problem
. . . at the very top, over the top of the pulley, there is just one line. So this line must also withstand a pull of 20 pounds. . . . With respect, that's not right. The tension in the rope is always 10 pounds, meaning 10 lbs in one direction, offset by a force of 10 lbs in the opposite direction,...

Lilypad got a new radio
A handheld VHF - the Standard Horizon HX600S. My old one is installed below with no remote microphone capability, so this allows VHF in the cockpit, which is a big improvement. Plus it has DSC that hooks up to GPS, for semi-automated distress signals with position included. A more everyday feature, ...

Two sailboats = a race
My wife and I were beating north from the Severn River last year in Lilypad, our CD27, within sight of a Beneteau 30-something on the same general heading. We were pointing higher and had a better distance made good to windward, so we overtook and went under the Bay Bridge first. I quietly expressed...

Was the lantern lit?
Because if so, and if you could get that Cape Dory moving fast, and I mean really fast, then wouldn't relativity make that lantern heavier and heavier?
(sorry, your Isaac Newton quote triggered the thought and I couldn't resist).
