John,
I went to a broker last year when West decided to exit the business and ended up with Zurich which was better coverage at a lower rate. I also used them with the new boat.

autopilot v vane
Larry, On our 33 I have a monitor and a autohelm wheel pilot. the vane is great in all conditions except on a broad reach to dead down wind. Pat is correct re the below decks autopilot. On our new boat we have a WH below deck pilot that is pretty amazing. This summer we experienced conditions simila...

Hey Randy,
I am in no way trying to imply that one boat is better than another-that is all in they eye of the beholder and his/her intended use. I love the cape dory design but found that the tankage is poor for cruising unless you want jugs on your deck, below decks storage is limited and the performance aspec...

different boat-
Well we were not looking for a new boat as we loved our 33 (and still do- in some ways a slow market is keeping us from having to face parting with her) but always looking to see if there was a better boat out there. We looked at everything and each time we came back to that there was nothing that c...

water tanks
Pat, On the new boat the water tanks are built up against the hull with the wood glassed over with two layers of mat. The rest of the tanks are built out of wood and then glassed. NO problem with taste. Also when looking thru the large inspection ports all you see is the fir planking- kind of nice. ...

Todd Dunn's models
Hi Randy,
Todd sure does good work. You must of really challaged him to work "backwards"! Nice model.
Not sure if I will have Todd do one of the new boat. Bruce Farr designs are more about function than the "form and function" look of a cape dory.

re half model
Randy,
Hard enough to part with the real boat so I think I will need the model to remind of her. This has been a very tough decision for us as we where not really looking for another boat but this one was way too special to pass up. Kind of how we found the cape dory also.

re cable
When I had the radar installed on the mast I had the cable exit the mast inside of the headliner and then cut. We had the cut spliced through a terminal block before running the cable aft to the nav station. This was done to provide a method to quick disconnect to make removing the mast easier if we...

re surf
Let me qualify what I mean (or what it means in California) to surf. It is to get the boat up on a plane well above its hull speed. For example to take a 24 foot boat well up into the double digit speed. There is no way a Cape Dory will do that. The small pick up of speed coming off a wave experienc...
