Six stints and still going strong

Just got back from an offshore trip with the owner/skipper of a large cruising boat. He had six stints for blocked arteries and had been through numerous surgeries in the past. Still going like gangbusters. Nothing seemed to slow this guy down!

CD 27

Any of the standing rigging replaced/upgraded recently? Boat last surveyed? Exterior and interior photos? Thanks.

My apologies for misleading information. Yes, all props have prop walk, but this can be offset with the outboard by pointing the prop in the desired direction of travel--even in reverse. That's how small outboard boats can maneuver so well in reverse. I do not know if you can do this on the CD26. Th...

Sound advice

Hi Vern and Lenore, All are good answers. You have no prop walk with an outboard--only inboards (shaft angle causes most prop walk). Outboards use direct thrust. The offset of the outboard is causing your problem. As suggested, make sure you use polypropylene when using a spring with an outboard. Sh...

Reefing Signals

Hi, All great posts. I have used these four points for many years to determine whether or not to reef. A single factor should signal you to take in at least one reef. Two or more factors signal you to consider a second reef. 1. Look to windward. Do you see whitecaps? 2. Feel the sailing wind. Are gu...

Advantages of CO2 and Steam

Hi Joe, You can use a CO2 extinguisher, which will do well on all classes of fire without the mess of dry chemical or foam. Because it displaces oxygen, you don't want to be inside an enclosed space when using CO2. There are a couple of ways around this: 1. Fire short bursts of C02 into the intake v...

Thanks for the thoughts. I will pass them on. I do not know anything about him or his boat. I know little about free standing rigs other than what I've read. There are pros and cons on both sides of the issue. I know that free standing masts have a good record on cat, junk, and wishbone rigs. Unstay...

Help with Running Rigging

Hi Guys, One of my subscribers asked if I knew anyone in the Hudson, N.Y. area (near the Hudson river), that could work with him to get his running rigging set up. He is building an 18 foot sloop with a free standing mast. He's new to sailing, so he'll need a lot of one-on-one help to get things rig...

Dave- That's what it is--a nylon 150% Genoa with a high clew. I believe it would be a good choice to go with the 1.5 oz cloth. More durable, less stretch, and you can carry it to weather in higher apparent wind (still, 5-6 knots apparent would be about as high as I'd be comfortable with--otherwise y...

Drifter going to weather

Dave, You can go to weather with a cruising drifter (1.25 oz nylon) up to about 4-5 knots apparent wind. They point higher than an asymetrical. Off the wind, you could carry it to about 12 knots. If you cut the clew high enough, you could sheet it through a boom-end block and back to a cleat on the ...

Take Care in Today's Market

Sea Hunt In my opinion, you are correct in your assessment. As people get desperate, they will try to recover cost instead of face the reality of the market. This is a buyers market--but I believe we have only seen the tip of this iceberg. You will also find less disclosure of hidden problems. In de...

Tough to Prove in Admiralty Court

John, In any event, if you have your engine on, it's prudent to consider yourself to be "under power". It would be difficult to prove otherwise in a court of law. "But your honor, it was clear that exhaust water was coming from the sailboats stern tube, so their engine was obviously i...
