We got her (CD25) but TLC questions

Post by Don Kolenda »

We're the proud new owners of a '74 CD25 (#76). Tomorrow will be our first day of work at the yard on her in prep to get her where she belongs. This weeks goal is to get her exterior rubbed down and painted and her interior cleaned. Thru the summer we'll work on her teak, topsides and misc. running rigging, electronics and the like. We'll save the rough stuff for the garage during the cold Chicago winter. Questions regarding boot stripe and topsides and interior painting ... We're going with VC17 for bottom. Wife wants to color coord for decorating -- i.e., earthtones (don't laugh please -- she's in her elements and she's letting me be in mine). Question is source and brand of paints recommended. Seems like Interlux is restricted to Red/Blue/Black. The bootstripe is now Red and we'd like Brown bottomkote. Beige'ish topsides, etc.

Don:

A good paint shop (not a marine store) should be able to mix any color you want, if you bring them white or a "tint base" to start with. I have never seen white bottom paint, however, and that may be a problem. Interlux makes Bottomkote and ACT in brown, and Pettit Trinidad comes in brown - Boater's World catalog #s 37-738-0290, 37-738-0415 and 37-925-0160 respectively; 800-826-BOAT. I just moved, and cannot find my Defender, BoatUS or West catalogs, but I am sure that it is available if you ask.

For the topsides, Interlux Brightside comes in about six browns/beiges/off-whites, and anything else you want can be mixed from white (or buy a darker shade and some white, and mix away).

Good luck with the new boat - just remember, the important thing is to go sailing.
