Anyone good with outboards??? I have a 1997 Mariner 9.9 LongShaft.
It ran like a top all last season and I had it winterized and stored it indoors all winter. I was told it would run rough at first until it burns off and blows out all of the protective oil. Well I have had it in the water since May 1 and its still not quite right. I have made sure the gas is good, and the oil mixture is on the money. I have changed the plugs and made sure the gap is correct.
The engine idles fine and runs well once I find just the right RPM (just about full speed) Otherwise it runs very rough... It sounds like a mixture problem, but I know that is not it...
Any other thoughts???

Douglas,
The words are "I HAD IT WINTERIZED"...........Oh boy!
This usually involves "fogging" it with oil. I know what the mechanics say....this should be done. I had nothing but trouble with it EVERY TIME they did it. Rough idling and if not corrected it can last the whole season.
How to fix it......
Gently spray some carb cleaner into the air intake as the motor is running. It will clean up nicely. After my problems I NEVER had the carb fogged again and my outboards ran just great. The truth is after the winter is over the oil from the oil mix (when the gasoline component evaporates) and the fogging oil can really gum up the carb. Don't touch the mixture.

PS....A thought
If you want to protect the cylinders with fogging....then
1. Run the engine dry of gas
2. Disconnect spark plug wires from plugs
3. Remove the plugs
4. Fog the cylinders through the spark plug holes when piston is at bottom of its stroke. Can turn engine by hand.
5. screw in the plugs and wait to spring. Carb remains un-gummed.
After all, a gummed up carb does not "burn off" like the oil fog in the cylinders.
