When trying to remove my completely rusted out 6 gal. Raritan water heater from the port cockpit locker on my CD 33 today I made an interesting discovery. They built the boat around the water heater! The cockpit locker opening at its widest was 13" and, yup, the heater boasted a diameter of 14" (!). Tin snips and a hammer solved the problem but now I want to replace the unit with a 6 gal. model that will actually fit in the locker.
Atlantic and Seaward both make square water heaters that look like they will fit. Does anyone have any experience with these?
I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks.

As an alternative, have you considered ESPAR? They're German-made diesel-fueled hot air and hot air/hot water heaters that can be mounted in the engine room. Low DC current usage and very convenient to install, plus you would have generous cabin heat as well. Re: Water Heaters - Atlantic/Seaward?
Derek, I have an Atlantic water heater that was installed in my CD 28 years ago. Everyone has told me to get rid of my hot water heater but I love it. It takes about 15 minutes of engine operation to get enough hot water for dishes and a short shower. I have never used the electrical heater part of it. Mine was installed under the cockpit sole so it must have gone in through the cockpit lockers. The brochure I have says they are 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" by 17 1/2" long for the 6 gallon one. Don't hesitate to email me if you need any more info.Derek Hillen wrote: When trying to remove my completely rusted out 6 gal. We have a CD30 and several years ago I replaced an original Raritan heater for the same reasons. I installed an Atlantic model T6E 6 gallon water heater that is all stainless including the tank. The letter "E" in the model # designates it has a heat exchanger for engine use. It has worked flawlessly for years. The 10 and 12 gallon models would also fit through your locker as they are only different from the 6 gallon model in length. Here are some specs from the owners manual:
Model T6E 6 Gallon:
Height: 12 1/2"
Length: 15" (excluding fittings)
Length: 17 1/2" (including fittings)
Depth: 12 1/2"
Tank material: 316L stainless
Case material: 304 stainless
Insulation: 2" R18 high density fiberglass
Heat exchanger: rapid recovery stainless steel
Recovery rate: 18.5 gal/hr @ 160 F Heating element: Chromalox extended life 1000 watt
Working pressure: 150 PSI

Re: Water Heaters - Atlantic/Seaward?
John,
I also have a CD-30 (Hanalei) and I'd like to put in a hot water heater. The one you decscribed sounds just right, but my question is where does the hot water lines from the engine hook onto the engine. I have a Universal 18, 14hp diesel. Can you describe were the lines come off the engine? Sure would appreciate any help.
Thanks, D. Stump, Hanalei
